Slow and steady wins the race

Description
NJD heads into All Star break with 3rd best record in NHL (as everyone expected). What is remarkable is that nearly 60% of our minutes and over 67% of our point production has come from drafted players (19% from trade, 14% from free agents). Thus far, we haven't needed Gaudreau or DeBrincat or Tkachuk (although it would be nice).

This ACGM scenario continues the slow and steady build

---------

1. Small Ball Trades -- One of the challenges NJD has is the list of guys who lose their waiver exemptions next year.

Bahl
Foote
Okhotiuk
Thompson
Walsh

A couple of them may get used in bigger trades, but if we don't land a big fish, it would be worthwhile sell a couple for less-proven guys we can hopefully develop. Moore, Portillo, and McDonough are just three guys I like, the latter two are potential NCAA free agents. It doesn't have to be them.

2. Tarasenko -- just a placeholder. Could be Boeser, Tatar, etc

3. Peterson / Blackwood swap -- An idea to give both a restart. The retention just put Cal's cap hit close to Blackwood's QO ($3.36 million)

4. Middleton -- Minnesota has a strong pipeline of LD prospects and a couple that could be near NHL-ready. For two years, it would buy time for our guys to develop.

I’d be pretty happy with a 2nd for Midds but the MN D pipeline is still 2ish years away.

Faber will play NHL games this year as a bonus for signing but he’s probably gonna start in IA next year if Addison and Goligoski are still on the team.

They also probably want Lambos to play a year in IA to try and bump his ceiling a bit, he’s been a PP2 guy in juniors and I bet they want to give him some reps. But he’s next year TDL earliest IMO.

As for the rest (O’Rourke, Hunt, Peart, and Spacek) I don’t think they enter the NHL convo until at least 2024 season. These are all guys like Bahl and Ohkituik.

Cal Peterson is a real, real, real bad idea. Rather start over with something fresh next year.

I kinda agree with "slow and steady" does it. There might be a expiring UFA goalie that might be better fit than Peterson.

Brodin -- Spurgeon
Lambos -- Faber
O'Rourke -- Addison
Peart/Hunt -- Spacek

It's gonna be a good group if they all develop

I think Lambos and Faber have #4 floors. With the core pieces of Spurg and Brodin, that’s a great place to be on the backend. Just hoping they don’t deal Addison because he’s small.

But in terms of the Devils, what’s going on with Bahl? He doesn’t have a path does he? If he’s capable of playing games ATM (3rd pair sheltered minutes), I do think the Wild could have some interest at the deadline. Especially if they move Dumba.

ya basically going from Blackwood, Mackenzie at 2.8 x 1 to Blackwood, Mackenzie 3.5 x 3

Graves & Vlad receive better offers too

My thoughts...

1. QO Blackwood at $3.36m (but I think he has lost the team)
2. Trade for discounted guy
3. Just roll with Schmid, Daws...but another year in AHL probably best
4. Get a free agent....then I looked at the list of free agents (very thin).

So its #2 or #3 I think

Trading for a discount guy that is so bad he cleared waivers and no one wanted to touch him at all is not the path. Even a cheap goalie from #4 shouldn't be nearly as bad as Peterson and 25% the price.

Bahl is basically in a job battle between him and Okhotiuk.
They have been splitting time while Marino is out.
And Okhotiuk is probably slightly ahead now.
But Bahl is better long-term prospect.

Siegenthaler -- Hamilton
Graves -- Severson
Bahl/Okhotiuk -- Smith

Once Marino returns...

Siegenthaler -- Hamilton
Graves -- Marino
Smith -- Severson

One of Bahl or Okhotiuk return to AHL.

Next year, Graves Severson go to UFA.
Bahl and Okhotiuk run out of waiver exemptions, but I don't think either will be 2LD.
So Smith, Bahl, Okhotiuk will battle over two spots (3LD and 7D)

Siegenthaler -- Hamilton
??? -- Marino
Bahl/Okhotiuk/Smith -- Hughes

I could see one being dealt at deadline

Great - sign me up!

But which UFA goalie takes 1-year deal?

Thomas Greiss
Craig Anderson
James Reimer
Cam Talbot
Jaroslav Halak
Keith Kincaid

Its a brutal year for FA goalies.

He will sign 3-4 year deal though.

We'd want 1-2 years for a back-up until Daws, Schmid break through

Could NJD pay him over those 2 years to make up for it? I’m not sure teams are going to pay big bucks for a 35 yo.

Some really well-thought-out ideas, as usual, and not just the ones involving my two teams. I think that both the Kings and the Ducks would be interested in Okhotiuk. Does LA have any forward prospects in whom you'd be interested?

Yeah.

Probably. But maybe better idea to try for a Vladar or even Goose.

I know they’re just prospects right now but I’d like to hold on to all 3 to see what they can do at a higher level. I’m pretty high on laferriere.

But if any get traded I’m sure they’ll be a sweetener in some deal.

hughes could end up being a steal imo but we’ll see

That one seems pretty easy. I'll take Reimer very much over Peterson. Goaltending is voodoo....don't waste money with term on something you have to hope rebounds to even average and still be overpaid.
