Toews, Jonathan
1$2,625,000
Trades
1.
WPG
  1. Toews, Jonathan ($5,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Jets get a local guy who has the experience and faceoffs as well as the leadership he brings just a lower teir add but could have a big impact in terms of bringing everyone together
CHI
  1. Harkins, Jansen
  2. Vesalainen, Kristian [Reserve List]
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Hawks get a young forward that has garnered interest on what he could do with more time. Vesalainen is an interesting piece in the case where he's doing well overseas bur fell out of the depth chart and a different team could unlock what he has within just needs the right team to blossom into what could be a good 3rd line checker. Also a 3rd round pick as reported the ask was a 2-3 but with the other upside assets here its a 3rd. Ik it may not be enough but depending on the interest in him most teams are bigger game hunting and if this deal can get done before a bidding war would be ideal but could see the 3rd be a second if it happens on tdl day.
2.
WPG
    Toews double retained
Allows for additional moves and possibilities
    ARI
    1. Gawanke, Leon
    2. Moe, Jared [Reserve List]
    3. Toews, Jonathan
    Additional Details:
Arizona gets a younger rhd that has offensive touch and could use a better system where he could get a chance to play. Moe being the starter at Wisconsin gives them a goalie that could be in the ahl for them and provide some more depth for the cap
    3.
    WPG
    1. Duclair, Anthony
    Additional Details:
Jets get a middle six winger at an affordable salary for this year and next year adding to the depth
    FLA
    1. Chibrikov, Nikita [Reserve List]
    2. Stanley, Logan
    3. Stenlund, Kevin
    Additional Details:
Florida gets a young forward and d with size and still some upside to play right now. They also get chibrikov which is probably the most tradable prospect in terms of garnering interest.

I'm pretty sure the Hawks would just rather keep Toews. I haven't heard he's forcing his way out and a 3rd isn't enough. Those two players aren't of any interest.

IMO CHI should turn over a new leaf this summer with their leadership group. They clearly are tanking as hard as possible. As an Avs fan who has seen what happens when youngsters are blocked by older, lesser veterans, I expect CHI to not want those kinds of disasters. SJ did the same thing.

Yeah I agree to a certain extent. CHI will still need to strategically sign veterans to help the younger guys development, but I do agree those vets are supplemental rather than the main focus.

That's why I think Toews is more important than a 3rd though. He is a guy that can help development of others around him.

Also of note that the reported ask was not a 2nd or 3rd. That’s what teams thought they would have to give up for him which is very different to what Chicago would actually want.

These are all secondary/B or C level assets which won't get Toews or the retention from Arizona.

I can see how that might be enough for Florida to consider but they might just prefer a pick Idk.

As described, if the Jets want a local guy who has the experience, is good on faceoffs and brings leadership that could have a big impact in terms of bringing everyone together, it's going to cost them more than that offered package.

Did you not read the last part of the trade? It says it might not be enough but it matches the reports. I also said that I could see a 2nd depending on the interest as he may not even move so the return most likely gonna get a return that seems less than what he brings also due to the cap.

The reported ask is a 1st or 2nd and good prospect; neither of these "prospects" are good nor really prospects. If this is all he's worth, because he only waives for the Jets, than Hawks probably keep him and explore signing him in the offseason.

The reported by ef is 2-3 so it probably goes to a 2nd and a good young player or a decent prospect gl getting a 1st lol

Everyone outside of GM's value late 1st way too much. They have a 33% chance of becoming a fulltime NHL player, 2/3rds chance of being a occasional call-up at best.

Not true beyond the first half of this year's draft; I'd argue the first 12 picks sure. The back half of this year's first round is pretty normal if you look at the last 10 years.

This draft has been said to be comparable to 2015 so a late first thing year is basically a normal first in most years so teams are less likely to trade them

The top 10 of this draft has been compared yes, beyond that is anyone's guess but lots of analysts don't see anything wildly different in the back half than in a typical draft year. Teams are betting that's not the case because the first half is deep and if there is any time to hold on to a late 1st to improve historical odds from 33%, this is the year to gamble on that. That said, doesn't change my statement that fans and people outside of front offices don't focus on the fact that the odds are hugely against landing a fulltime NHL player in the late 1st round. Not to mention, Toews could land a 2024 late 1st which is about the same as a late 2nd and good prospect; in other words, never said a late 2023 pick.

-Chicago passes. I'd argue that the Coyotes are actually getting almost as much value for retaining 25% of Toews' deal here as Chicago is - Harkins turns 26 before the start of next year and only has that season of team control left; moreover, putting up a 13-14-27 line in 154 career NHL games doesn't scream "big upside" to me; it more sounds like "warm body." Vesalainen had 5 points in 70 NHL GP before going back to Sweden; he's already 23 so the likelihood that there's a lot of value to unlock there is low. Plus, you've kicked the 3rd to 2024, so all another team would have to do is offer up an actual mid-tier prospect succeeding in North America and a 2023 3rd and they'd easily beat this deal.

-Meanwhile, the Coyotes just offer up a retention slot they're probably not using and get a 23 year old goalie putting up solid numbers on a bad U-Wisconsin team and a 23 year old offensive RHD with 11 goals in 37 AHL GP this season. These guys were late round draft picks but I'd argue that they're probably more intriguing prospects than the guys the Blackhawks are getting for Toews.

-If I was the Panthers GM, I'm passing on this - Stenlund and Stanley are depth bodies at this point, and while Chibrikov is an interesting prospect, he's still only 19 and a few years away from coming to North America, I'd assume. Duclair scored 30 goals last year and only has a $3M AAV; for a team under a cap crunch like the Panthers, I can't imagine them giving up that type of value when they're locked into enough pricey veteran contracts that a full rebuild is out of the question currently. At the very worst, they give Duclair the rest of this season and the first 2/3 of next year to bounce back from his Achilles injury and trade him at next year's deadline as a rental and get back at least a similarly valued package.
