More or Less Than Debrincat

Created by: DevilsFanZack13
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2023
Published: Jan. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The return I did for Meier is the same return that Debrincat got from Ottawa. Let me know what you guys think San Jose realistically could get from NJ. I have some Friedman and a couple other insiders saying the return for Meier could be less than Debrincat.

Chicago knew they were getting the #7 pick.

NJ pick will be nowhere near that.

Also, meier is better

Logically, it should be less than DeBrincat. But we'll see.

I agreed with everything until you said Meier was better. He definitely isn't.

I think it's arguable and that they are similarly skilled. Same tier of talent as Bratt and Laine.

DeBrincat got the 7th overall pick.

7th overall pick, 39th overall and Ottawa's 2024 3rd round pick.

The gap in value between what debrincat got and what you proposed is massive.

The 39th overall pick is worth the late 2nd and 3rd and the gap between 7 and 28 is a pick worth around 12-13th overall.

He will get more if traded w/extension in place, to the highest bidder.

Debrincat deserved more…
- Ottawa got a full season
- 2 years younger
- QO $1m less
- three 40g seasons
- Meier contract demands
- strength of draft classes

Meier deserves more…
- deadline fog of war
- can negotiate extension
- connection to captain

I could see it go either way.

I would probably add a prospect (outside top-3) or pick.

But could also see it end up like Mark Stone trade

He will sign with any team? Whatever contract they give him? I think it goes other way around.

He will be dealt to the highest bidder among teams he has agreed to extend with. It is his call if that list is 10 teams or 1 team. Not San Jose’s call to pick where he signs.

And once again I think it was Friedman who was saying Meier would have the power not the Sharks.

Was just trying to be concise, but yes. He's also open to resigning in San Jose.

While I’d bet a million Fitzbucks it ends up being more than Mark Stone trade return…I think it could follow a similar path. San Jose may get hosed here.

Ottawa gave up an early 1st and early 2nd . This is not close . Replace the 2nd with Holtz and it’ll be close to the ottawa trade

for reference the sharks traded the 11th for the 27th 34th and 45th. move that pick up 4 spots and a fair values would be your 23 1st plus 24 1st. then your 2nd will be on the 50’s and not 30’s.
comparable value would be 23 & 24 1st and 23& 24 2nds.

It will take more. The DeBrincat trade was really really bad. Not to mention your centerpiece here is a pick in the 20s, not 7th overall. You’re looking at either Holtz and a 1st or Shakir, a 1st and another pick. Sharks won’t sell low to Jersey because they know they have the power to resign Timo if they pull off a trade.

It wasn't bad. People just have wild expectations on what a guy needing a big contract will get back in a trade. Same thing is happening with Timo. He's gonna get less than people expect.

Better draft this year so the talent is closer than the actual draft #. Still big but not massive and until NJ is officially in there is no assumption

Just because it didn't include a good prospect, doesn't mean it was "really bad". Sure, we expected more, but in hindsight a 7th overall pick is way more valuable than everyone seems to think. Teams RARELY trade top 10 picks. It also matches the exact amount of compensation CHI would have received if an offer sheet were involved. CHI arguably should have negotiated a little more, like a Greig/Jarventie/JBD but in reality the value was not as far off as everyone, including myself, made it seem at the time.

I honestly doubt DeBrincat even wants to stay in OTT. I think this was a forced "trial run" for them, hoping they could convince him to stay long term. All they were really paying for was one season of Cat and a chance to convince him to stay. And CHI got two guys out of it that they really like. Davidson essentially turned a 36th overall pick that probably would have ruined our chances at tanking this season, into two very strong prospects and one more pick this year. Which, judging from this years draft should be another VERY good player, even if it is a 3rd round pick. In the big picture, it makes sense and was the right way to go.

Either way, I don't think Meier is more valuable. And I doubt he gets "more" in the current trade market.
