I don't think you've really improved the team much. I don't mind targeting Toews but the deal isn't structured very well.

Hawks decline both those deals. Hawks got a 2nd and Caleb Jones for the corpse of Duncan Keith. You really think Ken Holland is steal Toews and Lafferty?

Only way they'd make a deal where they get this little back for Toews is if Toews insisted on it and wouldn't waive for any other team. This is so little return there wouldn't even be a point in doing it.

      They didn't get a 2nd, they got a 3rd.

Hawks decline both. Not a chance JP gets Lafferty. Toews deal is a 2nd for 50% retained on Toews; add in Foegele who's a dump and it's more.

Yes. He played top-4 in a squad that went deep in the playoffs. That's worth a 3rd and a mediocre LHD (especially considering Broberg's impending arrival).

They shouldn't have taken him without salary retention, but then he retired making it a moot point (the cap crunch was in year 2). It all worked out well for Edmonton.

This is the first time I've heard an Edmonton fan not complain about Keith. The offer in this acgm is lacking another 2nd atleast. Just because the hawks have cap space people seem to think they'll just take your cap dumps for free. That's not gonna happen.

When your guy is overpaid as much as Toews is, you have to expect salary back in order to facilitate a deal. That's the way it is.

That's where retention comes in. Cap dumps are never free

Why does it feel like Arizona's almost getting a better return for their partial retention? All Chicago is getting is a $3M reclamation project (JP), two unwanted bottom-6 deals that add another $4M to this year's cap (and $2.75M to next year's), a 2nd, and a 6th for Toews & Lafferty. They're eating or retaining $10.5M of cap total - I get that they're going to have to take some cash back in a Toews deal, but this is 3 contracts totaling a $7M cap hit this year you're dumping on them. It just doesn't feel like nearly enough for Chicago to bite.
