I highly doubt the Isles are moving Raty.

Isles are passing. Not moving Raty or our 2023 1st. We are not making playoffs, we will be sellers at the deadline.

I think the Sabres would try to make that 2nd either their's or Vegas', but even if they can't do that, I think that is a reasonable deal still. They would probably want the pick top-5 protected if there is anything to change.

This is essentially what everyone thought CHI would get for Cat last year, and if you consider how much more valuable a 7th overall is than all of these trades, what they did get is comparable. But I still somehow doubt SJS pulls out something like this for Meier unless he comes with an extension.

I think with the QO thing, Grier is gonna let teams talk to lemieux (if there is an offer that he thinks is close). I agree, without some kind of long term certainty, nobody is paying these prices

I would do that assuming I've had the chance to talk extension

Each teams extend Meier long terms around 8.5M AAV
I only took teams who could have Meier with an extension in place

Not sure why a team would be taking a shot on Nikishin, especially when trading a player like Meier. There is a real possibility Nikishin never plays in the NHL. I see him as a player the Canes don’t get enough return on due to uncertainty that he just stays with the Canes.

The trade here is probably right from a value perspective but probably doesn’t make sense for either team.

Nikishin has 2 more years under contract in the KHL, you don't expect him to make the jump in the NHL right after ?

What people seem to always forget is that San Jose doesn’t have to move Meier. Trades like these should be expected or San Jose should just keep him. As a sharks fan I don’t mind these trades at all

That is when I would expect him to come over IF he comes over. GMs are very connected in, and Nikishin was traded to SKA for a boatload of assets and signed the extension. He’s made a lot of comments (translated of course) about being with SKA for the rest of his career.

If we are talking about what a realistic return for Meier is, I don’t see Nikishin a realistic target Greer would be targeting.

You see, I didn't know he made comments on playing with SKA long terms
In that case the prospect going to SJ should be Scott Morrow but I doubt Wadden moves him

No clear cut answer on the future of Nik so I don't think he will be part of any trade requests on either side for the time being. He may be saying what SKA wants to hear for now. I would not rule out him staying or leaving the KHL. We just don't know yet.

Never said they should do it, it's more what it would take to get Meier extended
But you are right, they aren't in a spot to do such a bold move

I think NJD and BUF make those trades knowing Meier is re-signing. Grier has allowed teams to talk to his agent so I’m assuming an extension is signed the second the paper work goes through.

NJD makes the most sense IMO but BUF could very well add Johnson to that current offer since they’re so stocked and know what is what in their depth chart. They’ve got 3 2nds and are in spitting distance of the playoffs and could set themselves up to steam roll for the next 4-5 years.

It’s part of the confusion right? What is Nikishin supposed to say - yeah I’m gonna leave Russia as soon as I can?

I really don’t see they moving Morrow, but the only way they do is a young player who will sign an extension.

Burns is a top-pairing Dman on the 2nd best team in the league.

that's a real apples and oranges kinda comp. Burns is 37 years old and still had 3x$8M left on a deal with an extremely strong NTC (he submits a list of 3 teams he's ok with a trade to every year and that's it) who was showing signs of decline (scoring at a 50 pts/82 GP pace from 2019-20 through last season after scoring at a 75 point pace the 4 seasons before). Any team that was going to give up premium assets for a player that old, with that big of a cap hit, would have been raked over the coals - if Burns had kept regressing down to a 40-45 point player, I'm sure Carolina would regret taking him on at even $5.3M through his age-39 season.

Meier's 26 years old, has been a hair under a PPG player going back to the beginning of last season (63-61-124 in 128 GP) and, even with an 8 year extension, will end that contract younger than Burns was at the time of his trade. Even if you don't want to pay it, there's a price point for players with that kind of age and production, and it's going to start with a 1st round pick and another strong asset.

      Here's a BUF trade offer:

      Timo signs for 3 X $10mm.
SJS retains $2mm for 3 years.

BUF gives SJS our 3rd + Weissbach + Murray

No one is giving up 3 1sts + a 2nd for 1 player. VGK is so happy they did that.

ANd they got a 3rd in return, at least.

Comparing 37 year old Burns who was making $8m for 3 more years and Meier who is 26/27 in his prime isn’t correct - not comparable.

You are correct Burns is a top pairing defenseman on the Canes, but what does that have to do with a trade with Meier?

Burns is a top-pairing Dman on the 2nd best team in the league.
