I'd be happy with the NJD trade though I think it would make more sense that Okhotiuk is replaced with a RD prospect since NJ is loaded with them and SJ recently shipped out Merkley.

Is Meier willing to sign a long-term deal with San Jose? There's a real possibility that he isn't. Therefore they are motivated to trade him, as there only option then would be to qualify him ($10M x 1) and sell him as a pending UFA next deadline. He'll be worth less as a pending UFA.

So they're going to get the best return for him right now and they know it. It's not their only option, but it's the best one. So you can't pretend they don't have any motivation to make a deal.

There's nothing out there indicating that he is not interested in signing long term in SJ, and SJ can afford it (assumed ~$9mx8).
People speculated Hertl was good as gone last deadline and SJ paid the man.
I agree with you that SJ would get the best return for Meier now and they would be motivated if they don't think they can get Meier to agree long term.
Grier indicated he's open for business on everyone but Hertl (because of recently signing), but also has made a lot of quotes about wanting to keep Meier. We really all have no idea.
I think SJ fans just want to remind people of the likely resign-in-SJ option when people are throwing out comps like Fiala where MN would have had to move a lot of salary to resign Fiala so Guerin's hand was forced.

      Here's a BUF trade offer:

      Timo signs for 3 X $10mm.
SJS retains $2mm for 3 years.

BUF gives SJS our 3rd + Weissbach + Murray

No one is giving up 3 1sts + a 2nd for 1 player. VGK is so happy they did that.

ANd they got a 3rd in return, at least.

      what even is this?
SJ counters with Vlasic for Power!

Despite your crazy talk you're right about the overpayment. Mittelstadt dropped from this offer and it becomes more realistic assuming trade-and-sign

Ostlund + 1st seems more than fair. With a contract in place.

      3rd + Weissbach + Murray + $2,75mm in cap space
      Burns + 3rd + Lorentz + Makiniemi

Those are the trades I'm comparing.

probably needs a smaller 3rd asset to get the deal done, but agree it's fair because BUF 1st is going to be more valuable than the other teams 1sts

Throw in Asplund and get a 4th/5th back.

      SO:

      Ostlund + 1st + Asplund <> Meier + 4th.

      Deal.

nah, SJ is not going to give up picks for Asplund and they're not giving up Meier for just a 1st+single prospect unless that prospect is better than Ostlund (Savoie/Kulich). Both Buffalo and NJ are drowning in good prospects and they can afford to toss in something like a 3rd or a lesser D prospect

      I'd offer Savoie + 2nd + 3rd as an alternative.

That would be a take-it-or-leave-it offer. And that is if Timo agrees to a contract.

JUst cuz BUF has prospects, it doesn't mean we need to overpay.

SJ is the desperate team here. Not BUF.

They have motivation to make the deal. But other teams know exactly what you said. Meier can simply take a 1yr $10mm QO and walk to UFA. He's not worth 3 1sts and a 2nd.

      I agree.

That's fair. I'm not saying he wants out, but that there's a pretty good chance he won't want to stay.

I think he'll bring a decent return in a trade - something like Chicago got for Debrincat. He's certainly not a cap dump.

Yes, these offers assume Timo extends with his destination. No SJ is not desperate, not sure why you believe that. The most likely scenario is that SJ will resign Meier and continue their quest for mediocrity
The point I was making is it's not as detrimental to Buffalo to throw in another useful asset as they have a larger pipeline and can afford to easier.
Meier definitely isn't going to BUF if they are actually that stingy.

$6mm for 7 players doesn't equal desperate? How many players cost an average of $857K?

The point I'm making is, BUF is the highest scoring team in the league. We don't need more Fs. Would we like Meier? Sure, but we have no reason to just "throw in" more than is necessary.

      We gave SJS Kane <> 2nd + 4th + O'Regan.

      When he re-signed, BUF got a 1st instead of a 2nd.

      Seems fair.

I'd pay more, because I think BUF got hosed on that deal. But 2 1sts more? No

To be fair, when you're talking about replacing names like Nick Bonino, Michael Eyssimont, Jonah Gadjovich, and Evgeny Svechnikov, you probably shouldn't be paying much more than $857K to replace them. The only names that they probably need to spend more than the league minimum to replace/re-sign would be Noah Gregor & James Reimer - the other 4 should all just be replaced by guys that are currently playing on their ELCs in the AHL.

They can fit a $9m extension for Meier, people have done the ACGMs to show it. Yeah I agree that BUF would be better off targeting something other than more offense. It's necessary for SJ to want to trade away Meier. Your offers are not enough for SJ unless something comes out that lowers his trade value more

The cheapest player in the league costs $733K. SJ needs to make moves for their cap. To deny that is denying reality.

      Why?

      Same age.
Scoring at roughly the same pace ( in terms of league standards)
      Same amount of money.
      Both physical power forwards.

      Kane had off-ice issues.
      Meier has contract issues.

      What's so different?

they're not. It means he's going to use it as leverage to get the somewhere around $9m that he reportedly wants for an extension

      Why?

      Same age.
Scoring at roughly the same pace ( in terms of league standards)
      Same amount of money.
      Both physical power forwards.

      Kane had off-ice issues.
      Meier has contract issues.

      What's so different?

When Kane was traded 20G 20A
      Meier currently 28G 20A

      Is 8 goals worth 2 more 1sts ?

      Not to me.

Meier is better and Kane's off-ice + locker room cancer issues completely dwarfs Meier's $10m QO

      Agree to disagree.

Meier may be slightly better. Not 2 1st round picks better,

Then factor in cap space around the league?

The cheapest player in the league costs $733K. SJ needs to make moves for their cap. To deny that is denying reality.

22 man roster built with Meier QO'd at $10M, Noah Gregor retained at $1M, and guys they currently have under contract called up to fill in the roster holes. $2M leftover to find a suitable 1B goalie to tandem with Kahkonen. They're not in the *best* cap situation but this isn't like the Fiala situation, where Minnesota would have to dump contracts to be able to afford re-signing him. They have the room to keep Meier if no one meets their price.
