I don’t think this is “going for the cup” unless that cup has the beer in it. The beer from the 19th hole on a course after the 2nd round.

This team already has cup potential, so, if they add a few more pieces, they would be favs to win the cup

We are a really good regular season team that lacks game breakers that decide playoff series. Maybe a healthy Freddie helps bridge the gap. While I fully expect us to make depth type moves instead of trading for game breakers, this would be on the lowest end of depth moves.

1. We are leaving 5 million on the table
2. Barabanov is a 3rd liner on good teams.
3. Boyd is a 4C on good teams.

We effectively added a 4C and a 3LW and calling it a cup push?

I like Couture a lot but that is a long time to carry him. Much like Burns, we value him but not at 8 million from 36-38.

I don’t see San Jose trading what see as low on Barabanov. $2.5 mil for 50 points, I wouldn’t move him unless a 1st comes back

I think there would be 2m in retention.

Don't mention the B-named guy. Most are still furious about that.

Well depending on the price, im sure there would be interest. Im not sure it makes sense for SJ though. 2 retention slots taken up for another 2 seasons with Coutures carrying another 2 seasons afterwards. I don’t think the Canes would pay much, like the previously mentioned unspeakable.

We're rebuilding unofficially, I think we could take on all 3 retention slots if necessary. We have 6m tied up in people not on this team right now.

Wouldn't surprise me if Couture and Karlsson were gone with retention on the books next year. Imagine Couture (2m), Karlsson (3.5m), and Burns (2.7m) with retention. Hurts to think it's possible/probable.

What makes you think they will offer? Especially if Meier won't extend in New Jersey.

He fits their timeline better imo. I see the best fit there and I think he extends there.

Could be wrong. Probably am.

They don't have the cap room for it. They have to replace Severson, Haula, Wood, Tatar, and Graves and re-sign Bratt, Bahl, Blackwood, Sharangovich, Zetterlund etc etc. They may not have room for it

They got 36m in cap space next year and the cap is going up even more in the next few years. I think they could afford two deals at 8x8 for both Bratt and Meier. Still have 20m.

I don't know that want to they keep some of the players you mentioned either.

Who knows. Maybe Meier just resigns with the Sharks and everyone shuts up about it.

San Jose physically cannot afford to qualify him

They'll have a lot of people on ELCs next year, I think they can.
