If the goal is to get better now and in the short/medium term assuming they resign Horvat, NYI got the best player in the trade. Not sure the goal should have been to do that though.....

Solid pickup for Van though. Smart move.

Returns fine. 1st + Prospect was pretty standard based on previous deals. Not big of Beauvillier but at worst he's a 3rd line goal scorer.

Lou must feel pretty confident that he can re-up Horvat

Can I say both teams lose?

I think nyi overpaid if they cant get him to resign. They're not contenders and frankly may miss the playoffs. I do agree they need more higher end offensive skill so good job there. But they paid a large price for a pending ufa and they're not really in the place to do that. Plus they already had one very shallow prospect pool and traded from it plus a first. Eep.

If they resign him I'll reconsider

For van:
They got decent value I suppose, but they had to accept a lottery protection to get the good prospect. Okay I guess. But why on earth trade for beauvelier. Unless more happening they have way to many top 6 wingers.

Finally the Horvat to BOS trades can stop.

Think Lou overpaid, unless Horvat gets extended which I imagine is the case here.

Capfriendly is absolutely off their rocker on this one.

NYI wins this deal easy. Terrible return for Horvat.

He traded the Horvat pick in 2013 for Schneider.

So I would say, yes, it counts as another former Devil.

(Probably Rico next)

FINALLY something happened, maybe this opens the flood gates and we start seeing more trades pre deadline.

Think this may actually be a fair trade on both sides. With Varlomov's salary coming off the books, should leave enough room for Horvat to be extended. NYI is going to need a cheap goalie for next season, but there are a lot available on the market, as as one of the best defensive teams out there, they don't need that good of a goalie for a backup.

Terrible for the Isles. They can turn it around if they flip him for a better return but I seriously question Lou's ability to do that. They very well could miss, should miss the playoffs and they just dealt there best prospect like wat...

Better be the case. And if Bo would rather test UFA?

I'm giving Lou the benefit of the doubt that Horvat will be extended, because why else would you trade your #1 prospect that's a C unless you had insurance of an NHL ready top6 C coming back longterm.

If Horvat isn't extended, Lou should be on the hot seat.

of teams trying to get back into the playoffs, I kinda felt Buf would've been a better fit, and they have a ton of cap if they do want to sign him. (protected 1st, JJ Peterka (and flip him to Ott) and Devon Levi :P)

It's his realistic value. Raty was NYI's best prospect and Beauvillier is a decent player. This trade doesn't change anything for NYI and now they're likely to overpay resigning him

And people don't think Meier can return Alex Holtz...Timo>Horvat. Grier's price just went up.

Yes and no. I love Meier but centers have a premium. Meier's physical game has a premium too. So hard to say

Meier has been better up to this year, not so clear this year.

Meier's massive qo makes it hard to know what value that holds.

Id personally prefer Meier but I'm not sure he holds more value in the NHL where centres reign supreme in value

Does NYI have a deal with Bo?

They kinda suck right now. SO a lot to pay for a rental.

I don't think its a lot for a rental at all. Not one of Horvats calibre.
I'm surprised the Isles made the move based on their position in the standings, but more than anything I think its an underwhelming return for the Nucks

Lou would never do that deal without an extension.

He got the best player in the deal, a 1st line center with goalscoring skills and character.

NYI win.

This.
Despite Isles fans saying over and over that they did NOT need need a center when Barzal looks to be moving to the wing.

Beauvilier is a cap dump. He's overpaid for what he brings.

Raty could be.. maybe... a 3rd line center.

The pick is the only worthwhile piece. And it's a big piece!

Isles Cup window is now even though they arent close to an elite team, they needed to do something. The worst thing you can do is be average.

Isles win the trade, I guess.

Raty being their top prospect is because of a bad farm system, not because Raty is a top prospect.

Beavillier is not a decent player. He has upside still but he has been bad the last 1.5 seasons.
At his cap hit he is a plug

BUF would never do that. Horvat isn't a need. JJP is a unicorn and Levi is considered the #1 G prospect. That's a lot to give up for a rental. Glad BUF didn't do that trade.

You'd have to imagine less, or he'll sign a 1 year deal with WPG and leave as an UFA. Also with Suzuku + Dach (and Beck coming up), our top is set.

I'm in the camp of "wait and see what happens". I think it's a win for the Islanders if they make the playoffs and Horvat re-signs, but if they don't and he doesn't they're out their two best assets for nothing.

Looking at it a bit more, yeah I think the Canucks could've gotten a better return than this. It could be on them for wanting a roster player in a return instead of quality futures.
