STL Blues - Time to rebuild

Created by: PuckShmuck87

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2023

Description
The Blues are a dysfunctional mess, mostly decent to elite players that simply don’t fit together. Players like Leddy and Kyrou might fit great on a different roster, Krug is an elite offensive defenseman on a team that desperately needs stalwart defense.

The Blues need a solid, young LHD. Chychrun seems the logical choice, but I want to move Leddy and Kyrou, and I don’t think AZ has the stomach or revenue stream to support those contracts. Hence, K’Andre Miller seems the logical choice. Kyrou might compliment NYR’s other top-6 forwards very nicely while Leddy gives them a steady puck moving veteran D. Kyrou and his elite production would fit more seamlessly with the Rangers.

Return players such as Blais, Kerfoot, and Mantha are selected due to their relatively low production/dollar and short term (other than Goodrow). Teams shouldn’t have trouble including these players in trades in order to clear cap space.

I am on the fence about moving Binner. He’s competitive and seems to improve with pressure. On the other hand, I’d love the draft pick.

Given these moves, the Blues should have $30M+ in cap space this summer. I’d try to sign Ryan Graves and possibly Pastrnak or Larkin. I’d resign Barbashev, Toropchenko, and Acciari. Not sure about the other RFAs other than Miller.

Either Kyrou goes or Berube goes. After four years, it’s clear they cannot get on the same page and it’s detrimental to the team. Personally, I really like Berube.

These are my thoughts. I’m open to suggestions. (Please keep it civil! ;-) )

Did you mean to add Carolina first to the Kyrou trade. Goodrow and Blais are more like cap dumps. I think you could get a 2nd as well without the first round pick

You think Binnington would be an upgrade on Quick that is worth a 1st. Well I needed that, lol.

Change the 1st to a 2nd and Quick to Petersen and LA might consider it.

I appreciate your response. I’m really not sure how Kyrou is perceived outside our market. Anyway, I’m just throwing ideas out there to see what might move the needle. Kyrou is going to be a perennial All-Star, but he’s a complimentary piece to a competitive roster. That’s not the Blues. Building around skill rarely producers winners. A perfect example 5hats close to home: Brett Hull played in STL for 11 years and never made the conference finals, but won a Cup with Dallas and another in Detroit. I th8nk Kyrou is that kind of player.

Do you think LA resigns Quick? Binnington’s numbers are poor this year, but for the most part, he’s played extremely well. The team in front of him has thrown him under the bus.

Depends on whether his play rebounds or not. That was the plan earlier this season before the wheels fell off, but that's when the team's defense was completely lost on the ice.

Copley has been playing so well over the past 2 months, that Quick hasn't really had an opportunity to come in and rebound. He had a poor outing on NYE where he let in a couple soft goals, but aside from that hasn't really let in any bad goals. His most recent game against Tampa, 4 of the 5 goals against he had absolutely no chance on.

Quick won't be traded. If anything, the Kings will acquire another goaltender at the deadline and run with 3 goalies to finish the year. After deadline day, the 23-man roster limit no longer applies. The only question is whether the Kings will extend him or whether he will retire.
