I Guess They Buy Now

Created by: dannibalcorpse
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 30, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I dunno man? They're buyers now, I guess? But like...very few picks to move, even less prospects, so if anything they're getting super creative.

Bjugstad is an affordable bottom-6 rental who gives me some Parise vibes - he's been a scorer before so if you need him to fill in somewhere he's not going to be lost. I can't see him being super expensive, bump it to a 3rd if you think Wilde is worthless and Arizona has no interest in him.

Bemstrom is a guy I've liked for a while now - he's finally looking like he's put it together, and he's still only 23. He makes the NHL team younger, has a little bit of team control left, and helps you rest Matt Martin & Cal Clutterbuck down the stretch so you can keep the playoff grinders healthy. Does Salo work for CBJ? With Werenski hurt and Gavrikov assumedly out the door, Salo can step in as an NHL-capable guy so they don't have to rush anyone up. He's got some term so he can be a depth LD3 for a couple years while you wait for Mateychuk to get NHL-ready but he's seemingly fallen out of the rotation on the Island.
Trades
1.
NYI
  1. Bjugstad, Nick
Additional Details:
NEED: Somewhat younger bottom-6 forward who can move throughout the lineup. On a 35 point pace, great defensive metrics while drawing some of the toughest assignments in Arizona. Forget the traditional 4th line - this is a big upgrade over what they've been running out.
ARI
  1. Wilde, Bode
  2. 2024 4th round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
VALUE: Bode's already playing for the Coyote's ECHL team so they know his game - and he'll never get a shot with Lou at this point. He's a wild card sweetener to make up for the pick being kicked to 2024.
2.
NYI
  1. Bemström, Emil
Additional Details:
NEED: Bottom-6 youth with upside. Pushes Bailey for a lineup spot, maybe? Huge AHL numbers, solid NHL numbers with favorable matchups. Flipping him with Salo is a "change of scenery" type of trade that hopefully jump starts both players.
CBJ
  1. Salo, Robin
Additional Details:
VALUE: CBJ fans, give me your thoughts. I think LHD is a slight need for the Jackets, with Gavrikov basically out the door, and Salo gives you an NHL-caliber player you can slot right in.

Best case scenario is the isles miss the playoffs and horvat doesn’t re-sign

How is it the best case scenario that we 1. don’t re-sign the guy we just traded a lot for and 2. Don’t even achieve the goal of the trade?

Yeah, I am so confused by this move, but, like...it's done, they might as well try and find cheap ways to upgrade around the edges? I don't think they have the assets to go all in on a Kane, or even a Domi, so targeting guys like this doesn't sacrifice a ton of draft capital and if it means they can be less reliant on Bailey/Martin/Clutterbuck down the stretch, I'll be thrilled. Bjugstad was a solid 40-45 point guy in his Florida days so he can slide up the lineup if you need him, and has been doing good work in hard minutes in Arizona. And Bemstrom is a guy that I think is worth trying to add - he's 23, he's looked good in his minutes this year, and he'd probably be the best young forward in the org immediately.

Horvat doesn't make the isles a playoff team, Horvat leaving the isles after missing the playoffs would be an extremely bad look for Lou and it would ultimately force them in to a rebuild.

I can't root for the islanders at all costs. They just made a braindead trade, and the only way I will be content is if it blows up in their face.

the isles are cooked man, it seems like horvat is a pr move to show theyre trying. The reaction to the isles trading for horvat is the same one that should be applied if Arizona or Anaheim traded for him

A rebuild for the islanders at this point (since we have no prospects) would go beyond trading Nelson, sorokin, parise, and Varlamov. At this point we’re talking about trading Pelech, pulock, Barzal, Dobson, and lee. So given that the Horvat trade is done, why not just root for some success now and not success in like 7-8 years after literally the entire team has been torn down and all the prospects accumulated from said tear down develop.

I am not rooting for mediocrity. Lee you can't trade, but his regression will help to tank. A rebuild would be around Dobson and Barzal. They should trade pelech and pulock if they would waive their NTC,

The sad part about this trade is the isles currently have the worst present and future in the NHL. ive never seen anything like it in my life

The cap and prospect situation sure is ugly, but the team isn’t that awful right now. Solid top six with Barzal, Nelson, Horvat, lee, and Palmieri, decent center depth, solid defensemen, and a superstar goalie. Worse islanders teams have been one win away from the Stanley cup final. If this team can make it to the playoffs, who knows what can happen

"the team isn't that awful right now" - thats the problem. The isles are constructing a team that will be 8th -12th for at least the next 3-4 years. You're not factoring in regression for the players that are approaching 30.

The teams that went to the Stanley cup finals had minimum 2 star defenseman. Eberle is better than horvat.

What I am saying is that it’s not too hard to improve this team. The top-six is solid, the defense core is solid, and the goaltending is the best in hockey. All they have to do is find some cheap guys that can fill out the bottom-six better than bailey, martin, and Clutterbuck. I agreed with you in the past that tearing down the team and trying to get a top talent in this draft was the right move, but things have changed.

Eberle is not better than Horvat btw

For the Jackets... we've already got a lot of Young Up And Coming defenders; what we really need is experience. I don't know if that trade is objectionable per se, but it's not particularly enticing IMO.

improve them to 12th-14th in the standings maybe. There is literally no realistic path for the isles to make the playoffs in the next 3 years. 0 - the team has very little talent , even with horvat and the top 6 guys you mention will regress. Like Ive said before, Arizona and Anaheim have a better top 6 than us (even with horvat) so the isles mediocre top 6 isn't going to cut it.

Eberle has been more impactful at almost every aspect of the game from 2020-now
