Quoting: noted
Well Krug is a useful player and the Kings need LHD. Peterson is currently buried in the minors doing nothing for the Kings…
Petersen is playing very well in the AHL. Much of their goaltender woes were team defense related, and Petersen was relegated before they addressed those issues. They have been playing better defense over the past month, and those improvements are reflected in their goaltending numbers.
The Kings are confident that Petersen will return to form. However, even if he doesn't, his cap isn't overly prohibitive. Worst case scenario, he never returns to form, and the Kings bury him in the AHL next season and buy him out in June 2024. His cap hit looks like this:
2023-24: $3.85M (buried in AHL)
2024-25: $1M buyout cap hit
2025-26: $2M buyout cap hit
Compare that with Krug. If he continues to decline as he has been, whoever owns his contract is not going to have an easy out. Burying him in the minors still results in a $5M+ cap hit every season, and buying him out will result in a $2.5M+ cap hit for the better part of a decade. His contract is much more risky.
Sure the Kings need LHD, but they're not going to pay a premium for a guy like Krug who could end up being an even bigger boat anchor than Petersen.
