Are The Canucks Really Off The Rails

Description
On paper, the Canucks have so much talent. I'm a really big fan of this Horvat trade, and I think it sets up the Canucks pretty well. With the amount of great young talent this team has, the Canucks have more than enough cap to go out and address their blue line by signing a guy like Severson, Dumba, or Gavrikov. I get the whole culture aspect of things over there in Vancouver, but if Tocchet could truly get these guys behind him, maybe the Canucks can pick things up. All hope isn't lost, and after aquiring Beau and Raty, I think this team is in a position to come back strong next season. Beauvillier in particular is an interesting get for the now, and I think he is decently underrated when it comes to discussing the return the Canucks got. For now, embrace the tank. Go out and get a great prospect and right the ship. I'd be truly shocked if we see another member of the Canuck's core get moved, and genuinely think the Boeser / Hughes / Demko rumors are blown way out of proportion due to the Horvat situation. I'm really rooting for the Canucks

The defense is still terrible outside top pair. I wouldn't target Severson if I were them. Gavrikov, Graves and Clifton are interesting to me.

Throw in a Schenn trade for further draft capital.

I'd be pleased (and maybe it's down the road) if Raty centers JT and Mikheyev when the time comes for him to be in Van (probably next season).

Either way, there is talent but there some tough contracts between OEL, Myers, Pearson holding it all back. Just going to have to be patient and hopeful the FO remains patient for at least another year and not trying to solve this puzzle in one year.

Funnily enough I was actually looking at both Graves and Clifton. I feel like Clifton will be resigned, but Graves will almost definitely be let go, I'm just not sure he moves the needle a lot for the Nucks. Gavrikov or Severson are the two I would pursue, but given Sevo plays RD, I picked him. Schenn will probably net you guys a fair bit of value as well. Raty is an absolute stud and I could easily see him stepping in as 2C. Hopefully things start looking up

Leafs have zero need or cap space for Garland. Value aside as well, Garland is already looking like a buyout in the summer

Hughes rumours are absolutely false. There's been a lot of smoke around Boeser for a long time. There are quiet whispers about Demko but that's more than there's ever been in the past.

Imagine if they won the lottery and got Bedard and then landed Michkov with the NYI 1st (who falls due to concerns of him not leaving Russia and the political atmosphere in general). Instantly overload the prospect pool with two supercharged prospects.

I think Clifton has played himself out of Boston $ wise. I'd prefer some shorter deals on RHD for UFAs. Some names that come to mind are Schenn or even paying a higher dollar to Jensen for a couple years. Maybe someone like Johansson or Woo surprises and make the jump. I'd just prefer to avoid term for an older dman this offseason. Maybe the following offseason once the cap is cleared up more.

Wrong, Garland would be a great get for the Leafs who desperately need secondary scoring. He is great at both ends of the ice and in transition while also not costing much to acquire. He would be ideal for the playoffs and beyond. That being said; that's besides the point. This ACGM is mainly highlighting the situation the Canucks find themselves in going forward and how it's not so bleak

He's not a fit in TO $ wise IMO but he's not a buyout. The only buyout candidate is OEL in VCR.

Clifton would be awesome for the Canucks. If he is available, thats an ideal fit IMO

The Horvat trade made a bad trajectory look pretty solid honestly. If Tocchet can the best out of Hoglander and Podkolzin, they could have a decent retool. If they get good deals out of Boeser and Garland, even better.

I think you edited the post. Garland is worth more than just a late 2nd imo, especially if they're taking Kerfoot cap back.

Ya that's fair point but I'm more worried about the following year with Matthews, Sandin, Lili, etc who need $$. I think they'd probably favor a rental like Tarasenko. Guess it depends on the costs for whoever they pursue on the wing if they do. Certainly Garland's cost is down now.

Kerfoot is purely a cap move and gets the Canucks out from the Garland deal which they seem to be attempting to get rid of(?). He's a pending UFA and doesn't bring with him any negative value. He can be extended beyond this season or not. All and all, he's a decent player.

I edited the post to include the "additional suitors" blurb just to convey that it doesn't necessarily have to be Toronto. Didn't want the Garland trade to detract from my main point. It's tough to estimate Garland's value. The other package I imagined was Kerfoot / Engvall (for cap reasons), 2024 2nd round pick, and Roni Hirvonen.

According to Rick Dhaliwal who reports Canucks news and talks he potentially is. Rn he is under the 1/3 buyout so basically he would cost them 1.88 mill x 6 years

So basically saves them 3.3 mill

In the Canucks podcast with Rick Dhaliwal he mentioned it

Basically the above post explains why

And with teams hearing this he is a buy low candidate and with Beau coming it's almost a given now one of him or Boeser is leaving

I love this trade from the Canucks perspective. Raty is an incredible center prospect and the first rounder could give us two picks in the top 15 this year. The sky’s the limit from there with who we pick, but it would allow us to draft a franchise center and an elite defenseman. The guy that keeps coming to mind is David Reinbacher. The guy is just so smooth and mature for his age and would be an anchor on the back end. I could see Graves being the perfect guy on the left side to play big shutdown minutes on the PK and last minute taking the stress off of Hughes. Trading the scraps like Myers, OEL, Garland, Boeser, etc is going to be huge for giving the youth the playing time. Look at the Rangers with Laffy Chytil and Kaako. I could see the core shaping up like this:

Kuzmenko Pettersson Mikheyev
Podkolzin Raty Höglander

Graves Foote
Huggy Bear
E. Pettersson Reinbacher

Obviously Miller and Lazar will slot in there as will our own 2023 first rounder but just imagine if that is Bedard or Fantilli.

You say you’re a Leafs fan, but I think you & ‘Nucks fans need to pump the brakes; everyone blames ownership but - at least on this site - ‘Nucks fans seem to be borderline delusional.
Raty is playing in the ahl currently; he could be a good nhl center (2C or 3C tbd) but no guarantee, and I don’t think you can count on that next year.
And ‘23 ( or could be a ‘24) Draft picks are not likely to impact at nhl level for 3-4 years?
Beauvilier carries exact same cap hit as Horvat but with an extra year, so not a lot of cap space to work with next year unless you unload contracts which we know is isn’t easy to do.
Unless they sign Bo as a UFA ( unlikely), Canucks centre depth will be pretty weak next year as will be their RHD depth. Tough to address both in FA, think’ll it be a couple more lean years in Lotus land which makes the kuzmenko signing the latest in a series of questionable moves

More of an Islanders L than a Canucks W. Canucks got a guaranteed first round pick, top C prospect, and a throw in. Pretty much what most realistic people were expecting
