The 1st round pick from LA needs to be contingent on some Demko performance metric. Demko has been out with a not-minor injury, and he was playing poorly (likely due to the same injury) before he went down. If for whatever reason he doesn't return to form, then the Kings are on the hook for a boat anchor contract that's even bigger and longer than Petersen's, and they won't take that risk.

Aside from that, the asking price seems reasonable, although I don't foresee the Kings having any interest in Dermott's services. There aren't many teams whose defense has been worse than the Kings, but Vancouver's is one of them, and Dermott can't even crack the top six on their roster. Dump him elsewhere for future considerations, or bury him in the AHL.

Here's the problem I see with all of the recent Thatcher-Demko-to-Los-Angeles trade ideas:

Demko was horrible this year, almost undoubtedly due to his injury. When he returns from rehabbing that injury, and plays the last third of the season, one of two things will happen:

1. Either he will display his earlier form, in which case why would Vancouver trade him; or
2. He will not show any improvement, in which case why would Los Angeles want him?

Vancouver fans have to stop dreaming that the Kings will trade Cal Petersen with substantial assets for Thatcher Demko anytime soon. We will all have to wait until draft day to see what the respective values of the two goalies are. And one asset you WON'T be getting is our 2023 first-round draft pick.

With respect to this specific trade, take the 2023 first and Dermott (who's utterly useless to us) out and make the 2024 second conditional upon some performance criteria to elevate to the 2024 first. That would make sense in the offseason after we've all seen Demko finish out the year. I have yet to be convinced that he'll recover any better than Carey Price has.

Typical very good point made by OldNYIfan. Fair enough. Even if I know the trades are unrealistic and don't work, I love hearing well thought out, sharp arguments from fellow hockey fans. Thanks.

P.S. - you know I'm not a Nucks fan!
