I'm not a huge fan of retaining for multiple years, especially for a guy I actually like in Garland. But, the value looks pretty good, and if they are thinking of a possible buy out it'd be tough to pass on this package

That most certainly isn’t realistic

The funny thing, is I have seen better packages that get shot down. Why? Because the mob thought dictates all TO prospects suck except for Knies. It's wrong but I don't really care

This is more than Horvat got. I imagine Kerfoot goes with whatever is sent to SJ and that is better than the more expensive 3rd liner the Islanders sent to Vancouver

This is less than Horvat got.

2023 1st >> 2024 1st

Raty = Knies

Beauvillier (current cap hit + level of play) = 2023 3rd

And reasonably so, too.

Since 2019-20

Horvat | C | 244 GP | 103 G | 95 A | 198 Pts |

Meier | RW | 252 GP | 97 G | 107 A | 204 Pts |

Horvat has put up near identical numbers (better goal total in fewer games) and plays the more important position. Horvat is worth more than Meier.

The idea is that Raty and Knies are around similar value. Knies, though, having the edge. Both prospects are the best prospects for their respective teams. For Horvat, it took Raty.
Its not that other TO prospects aren't good, it's that now the market for a player like Meier will take one of your top prospects. If TO wanted him, I can't see SJS parting with less than Knies.

The Garland trade is silly. Why waste a 1st on a 3rd liner and 7/8 defenceman. With how Dubas continues to find great value in cheap FA's I'd rather just not waste the 1st for a small offensive who isn't very good defensively.

Meier > Horvat.

Meier is younger, and teams are going to high value his size and grit. His QO is expensive but he's still an RFA. He has the clear edge.

Raty is a prospect who just hasn't yet panned out and hasn't looked all that great at times. Far from a top prospect. Beauvillier is an overpriced 3rd liner. If he's worth a 3rd, Kerfoot is worth a 2nd. And I agree a 2023 first is better. I am sure TO would offer a conditional 1st, let SJ decide which one they want. This year or next. That's better than Horvat's return easily.

If it costs Knies, I wouldn't be heart broken but i would likely just change direction and grab ROR or someone else that's cheaper. TO doesn't need a lot but one or two minor pieces could be very impactful. I think a centre is a must.

Your? First off, I’m not a part of the team, so it’s not mine. Secondly, I’m far from a leafs fan.

This is a significant overpay.

Cause Dubas can't add people through FA in the middle of the season and theres no way you're getting a player of Garlands talent for 2.5M x 3 this offseason. Did you see the Hagel trade last season?

Hagel is a lot better than Garland. And Dubas got Bunting as an FA. I am all for adding something at the deadline but it has to be something that makes the team better. Garland doesn't do much for TO. What little extra offence he creates is offset but his below average defensive play. It's like adding Domi, anything he adds offensively, he's going to give up more against himself. We have to have strong defence from everyone. If you can't outscore your mistakes you aren't worth acquiring.

A lot of fans hate on Engvall because he doesn't hit enough, or score enough or whatever but when he's on the ice (especially with Kampf) not much happens. That is a great thing when you have the elite game breakers TO adds. I love the nothing ever really happens good or bad bottom 6. They collectively outscore the other team's bottom 6, or at least hold a positive goal differential on the year (outscoring their opposition, they aren't the highest scoring bottom 6 I am sure. But adding a guy who adds 10 goals by seasons end but gives up 12 is a step back than a guy like Engvall who over the whole season only scores 15 goals and 30 points but allows 8 goals and 20 points, that's great value. If he doesn't score a point in the playoffs but isn't on the ice for any goals against, are we not confident that Matthews, Marner, Nylander and JT will outscore their competition over 7 games? They better, that's how you win rounds, your stars are better than their stars and you win. The rest just better keep the puck out of the net and chip in when you can but it has to be tight! Lock it down, be patient and make a play when it comes to you. A guy like Garland is more like Kapanen was, always going for it offensively but often leaving himself out of position defensively. And I have seen too many Kapanen blow defensive assignments that hurt us bad, just like Galchenyuk in the playoffs vs Montreal that cost us game 6. Gardiner in every game 7. Exciting players for sure and entertaining. Definitely good players but is he the right fit? I would say absolutely not.

Hagel is better than Garland. I just don't see him as a good fit. Too high event for my tastes. Like Kapanen was. Exciting but also not very good defensively
