Team: 2022-23 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 1, 2023
Published: Feb. 1, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
"10. As part of reshaping their franchise, San Jose is asking about goaltending prospects. They drafted OHL Sarnia’s Benjamin Gaudreau 81st in 2021. He was the backup on Canada’s recent World Junior Gold Medallists, but the Sharks seek to add more depth.

11. I wouldn’t say New Jersey is the team to beat on Timo Meier, but it’s clear teams know the Devils are very much in it. The biggest balancing act for them might be their salary structure. It sounds like they prefer to have no forwards above Jack Hughes’ $8M AAV — or at least not blowing that out of the water. That’s not only a consideration for Meier, but also Jesper Bratt. "

I'm going to take a swing at this and say if it isn't the Devils who are the team to beat, then it may be the Sabres who have a great goalie prospect in Devon Levi and all other bill of materials that the Sharks are looking for in a Timo Meier trade."

If they're trading Levi, thats and A+ prospect, they aren't adding another A - A+ prospect on top of that. Maybe Asplund

Personally, I don't think the Sabres NEED to make a move. But if they can lock in Timo for the next 7/8 years, they're gonna be a wagon especially with how they continue to develop their prospects.

Gotcha. I was basing it off of Corey Pronman's Under 23 List - https://theathletic.com/4046339/2023/01/17/nhl-players-prospects-ranking-young/

Rosen is at #145 and Devon Levi is at #151. Didn't know that they would be touted as A+ prospects in this case.

Levi has been outstanding in NCAA the past 2 seasons. Really his only knock at the moment is he is only 6ft tall and you don't see a lot of goalies succeed at the NHL level at that size. Only time will tell.

What if the G prospect was Portillo instead? Still a highly regarded goalie prospect, but doesn't appear interested in signing in BUF. Maybe SJ would be a different story.

Levi is seen as our “goalie of the future” here,
and commonly thought of as (basically) untouchable
I really can’t see the Sabres trading him

MAYBE we’d consider moving UPL
But that would also be tough as he’s basically become our #1 right now- and although we expect Levi to pass him in a few years, he’s playing so well now (12-3 record since a tough start) that it would hurt our playoff chances to move him now

So as far as goalie prospects go,
i think the only guys we’d be open to moving are:
-Topias Leinonen
https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=250696
He was the highest drafted goalie last year

OR

-Erik Portillo
https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=225158
Another good prospect, BUT we’re looking to move him bc he supposedly won’t sign with us bc he doesn’t wanna be stuck behind all the other good young goalie talent we have

I think it’s very unlikely you’d get Levi or UPL from us at the moment

Sabres would be open to that imo
And i do think Portillo would sign with SJ, as he wouldn’t be stuck behind UPL & Levi out there and would have much more of a fair shot to compete for playing time
He’s just buried in our depth chart here bc we have a lot of good young goalie talent

Zero chance Buffalo trades Levi; he's quite literally our only goalie near to NHL ready who actually plans to sign with us.

I just don't think GMKA wants to move that 2023 1st and I'd bet that he won't move more than one of those 2023 2nds.

That makes sense with me. It would be kinda funny having both Strauss Mann and Erik Portillo in our system as they’re north UM goalies. I could see us adding Portillo to the package but still wanting Rosen/Ostlund in this case.

Now that I think more into it. I don't believe Portillo has much trade value. he isn't having a stellar performance in net at Michigan this year and if he's going to walk away from the Sabres regardless, then why trade for him?

As far as his numbers go,
Michigan lost half of their defense from last year- including Owen Power
They also lost 5 of their top6 forwards from last year- guys like Beniers, Kent Johnson, Bordeleau, and a handful more

While they’re still winning games, they aren’t nearly as good of a team this year & it’s been a big adjustment adding in all the new young talent.

Bottom line:
The numbers don’t tell the whole story, Portillo is still likely a good goalie prospect

Of course, you guys could choose to pass on him, but that still won’t get you Levi or UPL most likely- probably just a “b level” forward prospect or 3rd round pick or something

If u guys do want Portillo, then best to get him thrown into a deal before he becomes a UFA & can sign anywhere

That very well could be true
But Meier could also be a good enough player to change his mind on that

Plus it kinda makes sense to move some of this year’s picks
Our prospect pool is starting to get a bit bunched up

But u could be right
Adams does have the pieces to outbid anyone though
IF he wants

Guess we’ll have to wait n see

Am of the opinion that this will probably be the last year of multiple picks in the upper portion of a draft. We know how big he is on drafting and developing and right now it looks like he'll have three picks between 16 and 48 (give or take a few spots) plus another on (hopefully) not too much farther down in the second round to stockpile. In what's said to be a killer draft ta boot.

If the right move comes along, and I would include Meier at a fair and reasonable acquisition cost plus a fair and reasonable extension, methinks he'll do it.
