I don’t think any team is going to let you trade a first a draft away when you have a first this year. It’s going to be a very late first regardless. The player drafted by it won’t help a team for 3-5 years. Waiting a year for it doesn’t make sense.

2023 (you can protect it in case of travesty if you like) and Voit will do.

I picked the 2024 1st because its an overpay, but not a bigger overpay. DET probably isnt getting a 1st in 2023 for bertuzzi, voit is a good prospect and the 2024 1st is probably as best DET gets.

2023 is seen as the better draft

What has Bertuzzi done exactly to warrant a 1st in a deep draft? Regardless of how late the pick is.

The overwhelming majority of Wings fans on here agree his value is incredibly low right now, which likely means they hold on to him. Which is what should happen.

If you’re trading for Bertuzzi it’s because you believe last year and every other year of his career that he scores on a 21-30 goal pace (barring the back year but were years removed from that) is what you will have come playoff time. If Detroit moves bertuzzi it’s because someone offers that value, otherwise yes I assume a short term contract is in order for both bert and the wings.

The deep draft argument is largely overinflated here. It is a deep draft. The top5 is like a top3. The top10 is like a top5. The top15 is like a top10.... but once you get into the twenties and late twenties it really isn’t all that different from another year. The entire draft class isn’t superior, the very peak of it is deeper.

One goal in 17 games isn't screaming that he will get back to that goal pace you are referring to. Probably not his fault, due to injuries, but still, why is a team going to pay a premium when all signs point to not getting a return on investment? He's also never played an NHL playoff game, so there's even less reason to suspect he's going to all of a sudden start producing again when games have far more meaning to them.

Detroit should keep him and extend him.

Agree that in no world does Bertuzzi return a 1st, but why do you assume he will re-sign with wings? He’s heading to FA (potentially); if he isn’t signed by TDL - Wings should move him. They won’t be getting a 1st (as discussed) but anything is better than letting him walk for nothing

I'm not assuming he will, I'm just suggesting that DET does sign him so they don't lose an asset for nothing. Tricky spot to be in, but I don't see why he wouldn't sign a short term deal with DET to get his game back. Much tougher for him to do so with a brand new set of teammates, and that new team is unlikely to give him a long term high dollar extension based on his injuries.
