It is almost like a bad team can have good players... I guess McDavid was worthless when the Oilers finished second last in their division 4 years ago

Yeah because trading Quinn Hughes 50% retained, Demko 50% retained, and Boeser 50% retained is a completely logical thing to do. Explain to me how this helps the Canucks?

ive explained this to you before, retention does not automatically make a player significantly more valuable if the value does not translate to the team getting the player. The leafs are not getting the value for the retention here let alone the value for the actual players.

Retained salary is off the books by the time you are competitive. You get Three first round picks and three first round equivalent prospects plus a young NHL D who is a top 4 guy.

Essentially gives you a core to build around plus the young guys the canucks have and get with their own picks.

Phaneuf, Freddy Sjostrom, and Keith Aulie for defenceman Ian White, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers.

It was spare parts for an All star D

You cant be that delusional, VAN retain 8-10m for the next 3-4 years and they get no valuable NHL players, a cap dump and late first round picks

That was due to the entire team beyond him and Draisaitl being trash.

I don't think he cares about the Canucks much like you don't care about the Leafs. The point is, selling the farm to get apparent top pieces from a terrible team doesn't make much sense

How exactly is that an overpay? You’re getting a 23 year old Hughes, who instantly becomes your best dman and is a top 10-15 dman in the league, a top 10 goalie, two 2nd line caliber wingers, and a good 6/7 dman, with nearly 10M in retention for 3 likely late 1sts, a solid young NHL LD, two good prospects, an injury prone winger, a pending UFA winger, and a cap dump. Not enough high quality for the Canucks to even consider (although it is a totally unrealistic trade in the first place)

well to start, Hughes and demko arnt nearly that good. Like, there are over the top takes and there are those. Hughes isnt even a top 15 d-man in the western conference and Demko has two decent seasons and two bad ones and is hurt, at this point he's not even an upgrade on the guys the leafs got out of the scrap bin last summer.
Boeser doesnt have great value and Garland is having such a good season there is rumours he's going to be bought out, and 7th defenders like schenn are not valuable at all.
And as I said before, retention does not magically make a player more valuable as the cost of the retention needs to be worth it, and in this case it certainly is not.

Try and name me 15 better dmen than Hughes in the western conference. You can’t. He may not be great defensively, but he’s improved and is not a liability in his own end like Barrie/Rielly/Karlsson

Demko was elite last season, borderline elite the season before, and had 15 bad games due to injury/terrible dcore/historically bad PK

Boeser at full salary doesn’t have much value, but at half retained he does. Garland he had a tough season, but I don’t believe the buyout rumours at all. I expect him to bounce back under Tocchet

top of my head? Makar, Toews, Pietro, Theodore, Josi, Hieskanen, Karlsson, Spurgeon, Ekholm, Chychrun, Hanifin and Morissey. I could probably find 3 more if I wanted to spend time on it but I think that's enough to prove the point.
And no, Demko was not elite last year, he was middle of the league average over the full season, and a few hot stretches dont change that.
And at half salary Boeser has ok value, not great value, and like i said, Garland's value is in the toilet, if he bounces back we can discus the appropriate value change then

Makar, Toews, Josi, Heiskanen, Karlsson I’ll give you. He’s in the same tier as Theodore, Pietrangelo, and Morrissey. I’m taking him over Spurgeon, Hanifin, Ekholm, and Chychrun.

Demko was 3rd in 5v5 GSAx and 5v5 save % last year. 2nd in 5v5 GSAx across 2020-21 and 2021-22 combined. While playing on a bad team with a horrible defense and PK
