If NJD was showcasing Holtz for a trade he would be tearing up AHL

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 2, 2023
Published: Feb. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Holtz ought not to be available. Some of the reasons why…

1. If NJ wanted to showcase him for a trade, he would be in AHL racking up points. We have seen what he can do at that level. They would not be sitting him in a press box.

2. Top-25 prospects are rarely traded. It usually guys in the 25-100 range that are used as trade chips.

3. Top prospects with 2+ years on ELC are less likely to be dealt. Devils have time, and are being patient with him.

4. Wingers normally get lower returns than Centers or Defensemen. There are rare exceptions (Rick Nash maybe). The comps should be guys like Fiala.

5. Goal Scorers rarely develop slowly and steadily. It usually just clicks. Except step-change development and that is fine.

6. Devils prospect pool is deep, there are plenty of good alternatives.

NJD fans have waited for years for a top goal-scoring prospect. Now they have one. Be patient.

You might have to accept no one wants the other stuff.

Sharks are parting with their best winger, possibly player. He might be the best winger to get traded this year at the TDL. However, giving up a top prospect is unimaginable?

It would depennd on how loose the prospect definition is.

Actual prospect (so guys who havent becomre full time NHLers ) maybe in the eraly 20s.

Young players (guys 22 and younger) not remotely

Look we don’t want to give up Holtz, but we will if the deal isn’t lopsided. The main issue has been the overwhelming opinion on this site is we will give up a 1st, Holtz, AND Sharangovich. That ain’t happening.

Don’t engage with this guy. He thinks he’s getting Mercer/Nemec. Living in LaLa land.

NJD need to stay the course. Not even close to their peak yet. Let BOS/CAR/COL whatever get this one. NJD still waiting on Holtz/L Hughes/Nemec development before they're really ready to sell some future pieces to win now. Not to mention future development of guys like Jack Hughes (SUPERSTAR), Zetterlund, Mercer, etc.

I say the same things in the BUF ACGM's. NJ is good (and better than BUF), but I don't think it's your time quite yet. If you can get a guy like Mier without giving Holtz then do it, if not then stay far away

Either that or Sharks trade with someone else. I don't really care either way.

You will get that kind of return from nobody. Stop trying to promote nonsense. Come back to reality.

I'll say that's too much. Can't speak for everyone.

Look at this positively, Grier has been nothing short of awful so far. You guys might be getting the SJS 2023 1st with Meier and we'll just get a 6th rounder from you in 2025.

THANK YOU! There is definitely an avenue here for the devils and sharks. A fair deal for both sides for sure.

Borderline. But he’s not this untouchable guy that shouldn’t be moved for an elite player

Hey hey hey, I want 1st, Holtz, and one of your solid B RD prospects, like Muk or Casey. I think it just fits what SJ needs best and what NJ has to spare. I am biased to Holtz for the Eklund connection, just like I want Meier to go to NJ for the Swiss connection

If Nemec is involved then it definitely drops from 3 trade pieces to 2, and we can argue over the 2nd piece

We’ll do the 1st, Holtz, Casey or Mukh.

    L. Hughes/Nemec/Mercer all those guys I don’t even wanna discuss. We’d be dumb to move those guys.

He is technically on a NHL roster, so if that is criteria for removal...than, no. But if included, yes.

    I get it.

Only a few years ago we were selling a Hart trophy winner. We thought we'd get the moon (Byram+).
We did okay, and turned the draft picks into Mercer and Siegenthaler.
But Bahl, Merkley and Schnaar were not what we were expecting.

So I really do get that

Generally, when using the terms in historical context, I try to use lists that have longer track record.
The Hockey News, for instance, has lists that go back decades.
But that is an annual list.

More recent ones, he is #15 on McKeens, #13 on Daily Face-off, #8 on THW, #19 on the Athletic (ex-NHL).

When Meier was Holtz's age, he was being out-produced by Denis Malgin and Anthony Beauviller.

(and Holtz is out-producing Meier at similar age).
