On the Decline

Created by: JackSC87
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 3, 2023
Published: Feb. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is still a playoff team, but in 2-3 years time this could very well be a high lottery pick team.

Cap is tight, so guys like Milano, C.Brown, Johansson, probably don't fit into this lineup as their cap hits likely increase from this season.

If Milano gets a raise, it wont be a lot. Theres more going on behind the scenes to him. I mean theres got to be. I dont understand how Anaheim didnt resign him last year. He had great chem with Zegras. He was a half a point per game player, but he brings a lot of skill, and at 1.7 mil (his cap hit last year) thats pretty cheap. How he sat on the shelf through free agency this past summer is beyond me. It took Washington to get 5+ injuries to sign him to league minimum. He's a half a point per game player this year and he has fit in well in Washington. Maybe he just was asking for too much money and nobody wanted to sign him.

Caps are looking at a full blown re build once OVI passes Gretzky in goals. The good news is that they won't be completely bare in terms of young players with Lapierre, Fehervary, McMicheal, Miroschichenko, Chesley. That's a really solid start for a rebuild. Once they tank for a high pick star player they will have a decent group of young guys and supporting players. Just pray they don't trade a 1st for a rental. Hopefully the young guys can learn from the group of Vets before they retire too.

I think they keep Milano unless he asks above 2.5 mil. I don't think the Caps re sign Gus or Jensen. They will want much more and Caps can't do it, not with 2 small D men. We need a few guys with size for next year and beyond. And I can link the article if you want to see it but Sheary already turned down an extension and Caps won't give him what you gave him. I think he is gone too but this will give some of the kids in Hershey a chance to finally make the big club. Just my opinion.

They'll be a contending team through Ovi's deal. No reason to keep Gustafsson or Sheary. Need to get younger kids in the lineup.
