Strome Extended

Description
I really like the Strome contract, and think it is perfect for what he's shown this year -- especially his connection with Ovi. I think that BMac's willingness to extend now also signals that he's seen enough from the group that he thinks they can still be at least in a similar spot next year in terms of competitiveness. Would not be surprised to see extensions for Orlov, Gus, TVR, and one of MoJo/Sheary before the season is up as well.

I also think that it means they are planning for at least one of Mantha or Oshie to come off the books in some way -- reading Sammi Silber's article about Oshie yesterday was particularly brutal. I have Milano, MoJo, and Gus taking probably a bit less than they could get on the open market to stay in a place that gave them a shot and a ton of success

Something I've seen going around a lot that I think makes a ton of sense for both teams. Basically the same age and draft pedigree, similar levels of success (though very different styles) in the NHL so far, LAK desperately needs LHD and WAS desperately needs RHD. Tough to move on from Fehervary but feel like it solves a need
LAK

Additional Details:
Caps give up an expiring Mantha for free or a minimal return to free up the space. As much as I hate it this would be a very Carolina move, could also see NJD and possibly TOR as a fit.

WSH
  1. Reinhart, Sam
Additional Details:
A bit of an off the board idea but FLA needs to clear space and recoup some futures. Completely guessing at the value here but this would be a pretty strong package.

I’m not clear on why Mantha has gone to pure cap dump territory in this situation, I’m sure Donnie Wad would be asking the same thing. Think the Patches situation and risks were clear, but what’s the deal here with Mantha?

Good player but doesn't really fit with Laviolette's system and is definitely a little overpaid (a nice article from Japer's the other day about whats gone wrong https://www.japersrink.com/2023/2/2/23581443/ant-man-quandarymania). Winger values in the league are so weird that I could see him getting a 2nd (Bjorkstrand last summer) to having to attach an asset (current Boeser situation). They are helped a bit by not being in the extreme cap crunch Vegas was, but Mantha is also a worse player than Pacioretty.

You've got some original ideas here and I like what you've done. I would think Mantha could go to AZ as next year they, again, need NHL forwards to fill a roster and his 5.7 helps them get to the cap floor. I agree with your unsure value assessment in your response to Caniac555 (hi Caner!), I would not be surprised if they get a decent pick or prospect or even as low as 'future considerations'. It's a conundrum.

The Kings want an offense-first LHD. Fehérváry is more of a defense-first guy. The Kings already have Mikey Anderson and Toby Bjornfot for defensive LHD duties. Can't see LA being interested in this swap.

No way Caps give away Mantha for a 7th especially to a rival that would actually utilize him and give him the TOI he deserves. If he went to CAR he'd his 70 points playing top players and getting PP time.

At that point they just need to keep him. He's so freakn good. Not his fault his coach hates him for some reason.

He absolutely would not be getting PP time in CAR and would probably be their 7th forward. Mantha is a perfectly average 6th/7th forward, he is not putting up 70 points lol. His best year in the league (where he was getting top minutes with top linemates!!!!) he played at a 60 point pace.

And the caps probably want more of a defense first RHD than Durzi. The only player that will be young, cost controlled, left handed, and fits that offensive profile is Chychrun. If LA doesn't want to pay the insane price for him, you're not going to be able to check every box at once. Fehervary is also no slouch offensively. On pace for 20 points with no powerplay time which is very respectable as a defenseman.

I think they'll eventually get him, they're just waiting for the price to come down. No team in the NHL is willing to pay the insane price that Arizona wants for him. The Kings aren't in a rush. They can wait until next season's deadline if necessary.

Mantha at his peak is 50-60 points but he needs top minutes and PP time.

He’s not good enough to produce without a top line role. We need to move on from him.

Love the reinhart idea, don’t love Mojo in the top 6.

Me neither but would rather keep the top 3 lines balanced and play all of them 16 mins a night tbh. Would also expect Lapierre and Malenstyn to battle it out in camp for the last spot, with Lapierre slotting into the top 6 and MoJo down on 4th line.

If he was getting top 6 linemates and top PP time through his prime he'd be putting up 70 points easy. Shame Lav is wasting him.

Laviolette could be utilizing him better but in his 3 years (including a long stretch where he was playing with Backstrom and Oshie!!!!) he has put up between 2 and 2.5 points/60. With the 18 mins a night you want him to get that is between 50 and 60 points a year, once again completely fine for a 5th 6th or 7th forward but nothing crazy. I really want to know who exactly on the caps he should be getting powerplay time over as well. Backstrom? Kuzy? Oshie? Milano? Strome?

That Backy time is misleading because most of it was with very hurt Backy that shouldn't of have been playing and Oshie hasn't been a top 6 winger for a year or so, great middle 6 guy.

As for PP time I'm giving him minutes over Mojo and Milano easy. I'd put him on the 1PP below the goal line then let him park in front of the net.
