Honestly I feel it’s more likely Toronto adds the third from Ottawa in this trade. You don’t get 3 years of retention on McCabe for a two round upgrade.

Sandin is nice but I'd rather wait for other offers.

I don't think CHI accepts. They are gonna want that 2023 1st for McCabe 50% retained. Then again, it depends on the market. So, we'll see. CHI definitely isn't including a 3rd, though.

The retention should cost a 1st, now what for the player? Got to love leaf fans who don't keep track that their team sets the value of 1st rd picks.

*Should* being the key word. But it has been pretty unanimous on here and with hockey pundits that McCabe with retention starts at a 1st. I do agree that much retention for that long should cost a 1st alone, but I wouldn't be upset with just a 2023 1st. Changing it to 2024 or 2025 definitely makes it less valuable to CHI, though. Not all 1st's are created equal. So, yeah, if it is 2024 or 2025, they definitely need to add.

I think if you're sending a 2024 1st instead of a 2023 you have to add another pick on top to make it work for just McCabe + retention , probably a 3rd. I think the Meier trade is in line with what Horvat trade has set as the example so far this year but I could definitely see San Jose asking for more.
