the big shark and bulstering the core

Created by: DannySavior
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 6, 2023
Published: Feb. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Meier signs $80M/8yr extension
Trades
1.
NJD
  1. Meier, Timo ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Is this a fair package? I think Zetterlund will be a top 6 staple in the future but is being underutilized on the devils. holtz is a little further in his development imo but i think he will be good very soon. Meier is the star in this deal so he demands a big return. There are very few teams that can match this type of return, if any, so i think this is about what he would get
SJS
  1. Holtz, Alexander
  2. Zetterlund, Fabian
  3. 2023 1st round pick (NJD)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (NJD)
2.
NJD
  1. McCabe, Jake ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
severson and graves expire next year, likely that one or both are gone. to avoid regression the devils should make their d core a strength. mccabe does that. allows nemec and hughes to develop without making it a must for them to be in the top 4 next season. teams like the devils who are in a good position for the future often get too cute and too scared to make a move to push them over the hump
CHI
  1. Sharangovich, Yegor
  2. 2024 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
2024 1st is top 12 protected
3.
NJD
  1. Acciari, Noel
  2. 2024 6th round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Acciari is pretty underrated right now. is this enough?
STL
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (NJD)

We really need it to be a 2023 first unless Mercer/Nemec was included.
(Dont angrily reply to me I know they probably wont be)

they dont need him but forcing luke hughes to be a top 4 dman at his age on a team with cup aspirations seems risky to me

mccabe would be the best defenseman on the blues and it would not be particularly close at all. getting 3 years of a top 4 dman at 2m is great for a late 1st and a player youre probably not keeping anyways, although he has had a bounce back

what do you want out of acciari?

The 2023 draft isn't actually all that remarkable after the first picks. It's basically an average draft year but with three extra first overall level talents.

it more so has to do with the fact that the sharks are further along in their rebuild. id rather have a player this year than next

Further along? Aren't they just starting?

They've picked in the top 20 once since 2017 and twice since Meier in 2015

1 - Heh. Funny stuff, man.

2 - Why would the Devils not be keeping Sharangovich?

3 - A 23 3rd.

Thats not really true, most analyists have said up to 20 are all decent chance to be impact guys.

This year is like 2015, and next year is not

Thats an overpay for Meier... The Price is a first, A prospect / first and 2 B prospects. What you have is A Prospect, B prospect, first, second....

IDK where you saw that but that seems like it came from a fansided article more than an actual analyst... The dropoff is around the 11-12th pick this year as opposed to 7-8 in years past.. That's still a deep draft but playoff team picks wont be able to take advantage unless its flipped into another package

I don't hate Acciari for that price, he's pretty good, but I'd rather just roll with the depth forwards the Devils currently have and keep the 3rd.

Way too much for Meier.
Zetterlund and the 3rd could be comfortably be removed and it'd still be a VERY rich return to the Sharks.

I don't like the idea of bringing McCabe in.
For starters it's an egregious overpayment for a #4-5 guy, Sharangovich alone would cover all of McCabe's value.
But ultimately there really is no need to bring him in as the Devils have such amazing depth in the D pipeline, depth that extends further than just Hughes and Nemec.
Bahl, Okhotiuk, and Walsh are all pretty much ready for full-time bottom pairing responsibilities already and by the end of 23/24 it wouldn't surprise in the slightest if at least one of them have outright developed past McCabe.

With two years of development in the NCAA there's little doubt in my mind that a 20 year old Luke Hughes wouldn't excel paired with Marino in the Devils top 4 next season, outright replacing Graves in the lineup.
One of Bahl, Okhotiuk and Walsh should step into the 3rd pair spot vacated by Severson (though whomever would get that spot would admittedly by a downgrade from Severson).
There's also Mukhammadulin who's coming over at the conclusion of the KHL season.
With 3 years of full-time KHL experience I'd expect Mukhammadulin to be a pretty good NHLer by next season already.
This next year's D corps would likely be a small step back from this year's, but should still be top 10 in the NHL:
Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Hughes - Marino
Okhotiuk - Smith ( / Walsh / Bahl / Mukhammadulin)

If Davidson can turn McCabe into a 1st and U25 cost-controlled forward with top 6 upside it'd be nothing if not an absolute heist.
Hope the Devils don't end up being the team taking that bait.

No worries Mr. paperhead Briere but I don't agree that McCabe has been playing extremely well since, ever, really...
This season seems to be his strongest one in the last 3 years but still not playing to levels above that of a #4-5, yet failing to provide surplus value on his 4m AAV.
