What if we gotta move Bratt

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 7, 2023
Published: Feb. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Losing Bratt is probably unlikely, but anything is possible. If we got to that point….Who would bid? What would return be?

Trying to think of an equally unlikely replacement. And some unlikely trades with division rivals, just to make it extra spicy.

(Don’t take too seriously…just thinking aloud to get break from another Holtz-for-Meier trade).

1.
NJD
  1. Caufield, Cole [RFA Rights]
MTL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (NJD)
  2. 2025 1st round pick (NJD)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Loosely based on 2009 Phil Kessel trade, who was coming off a 0.5 goal-per-game season (0.8 ppg) and was heading into his first RFA deal, similar to Caufield. Like Cole, he was also 7th in u-22 point production per game. Kessel was also recovering from should surgery that had put him on the shelf for 6 months. Boston had Krejci to sign as well and Wheeler, Rask due deals the following year. At the time, no one knew where the picks would end up.
2.
NJD
  1. Pickering, Owen
  2. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
PIT
  1. Bratt, Jesper [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Loosely based on Fiala trade last year. Pittsburgh doesn’t have the same prospect pool as LAK did at time, but Pickering is exactly the type of dman Tom Fitzgerald likes (long, mobile and smart with puck). This would be in the scenario that NJD cannot (or will not) meet Bratt’s salary demands.
3.
NJD
  1. Mantha, Anthony ($1,200,000 retained)
WSH
  1. Boqvist, Jesper
  2. Walsh, Reilly

Montreal isn't considering that any more than the Devils are considering an Anderson for Nemec trade

There is literally no chance the habs trade Cole and definitely not for a couple of late firsts, especially while Nick is in the middle of knitting him a pair of new socks.

Not sure what's more unlikely, the fact that you think caufield will sign for only 5mil or that habs would accept anything less than 3 1st rounders for him

On Devs Twitter there is one guy suggesting Lawson Crouse as a pickup instead of Timo. Because of the production I used it for Bratt. I don't see it but we're funning right?

Well if nj can’t meet Bratt’s asking price, surely the pens can’t. You’d have to take back a contract like Rust, who probably wouldn’t waive. Or two of Carter, McGinn, and Kapanen and Carter definitely doesn’t waive.

The only reason Boston traded Kessel was because they didn't have the cap space to sign him and Toronto was going to offer-sheet him if Boston didn't accept the trade. Montreal can afford to sign Caufield and have no reason to trade him.

Bratt is also worth more than Pickering and a mid to late 1st.

Caps pass but they would EASILY pay way more for Bratt than what PIT is.

Both facts I think are equally unlikely.

Just needed something different that 100 Meier-for-Holtz scenarios a day.

I would think if I'm the Devils and I gotta move Jesper Bratt, I'm sending him as far away as possible. I'm sure Seattle would love to figure out a package for him to put him on Beniers' wing.

What do you think Bratt would go for…if put on market as RFA over the summer (assume he is expecting $8-9m contract)?

So your thoughts on Crouse?

Indifferent. Would be good in corners, but there are better options for a big-body-soft-hands net-front player.

My money is on Boeser.

He would get a crazy return, way more than a later 1st and a good prospect. Don't sell low on him.

" At the time, no one knew where the picks would end up."

That's the big difference, we already know the Jersey pick should be bottom 8 and they're heading up in the next few years where the Leafs just lost their Sundin in that previous offseason. This trade proposal and comparison is basically the Peter Griffin mystery box meme but reversed: I've got a 28th OA pick but in the mystery box it could be anything from a 1st OA to a 32nd OA. I'll keep my 28th.
