VEGAS
-The Debrincat return is a placeholder. Whatever Debrincat is worth as a 2 playoff run rental, that goes to San Jose as part of the 3-way deal. In a previous deal, I thought he would be worth a 1st++, most people thought he would be worth more. Whatever he is worth doesn't matter that much. It's more the idea of his return going to San Jose to subsidize the Karlsson acquisition ala Turris going to Nashville to help cover the cost of acquiring Duchene.
-Once Stone is placed on LTIR, this trade would be compliant.
-Vegas can trade Debrincat at the draft after using him as a rental and recoup a 1st round pick ++, or they can keep him if Stone has a set back and has to sit out the 2023-24 season. His QO is 9M, but club elected arbitration can bring him to under 8M, so it wouldn't be difficult to settle somewhere in the 1 year 8.5M range.
-Assume any 1sts have some sort of protection.

SAN JOSE
-They get out of 75 percent of the Karlsson contract.
-They get Ottawa's first round pick (top 10 protected).
-They get whatever assets Debrincat returns from Vegas (or a different team).
-They are required to take the last year of Zaitsev's contract.
-They are required to take the final 3 years of Joseph's contract.
-Joseph is not living up to the contract in the current cap environment, but is still a useful 3rd line forward.

OTTAWA
-Debrincat will not re-sign in Ottawa.
-Even if Debrincat would re-sign, they cannot keep both Debrincat and Karlsson.
-Dorion is likely gone when new ownership comes back in. This is a political move to gain favor with the fan base and potential new ownership. Karlsson is still a fan favorite, and there are rumors about Alfredsson returning to the organization once the Melnyk family no longer owns the team.
-They need to dump long term cap to make room for Karlsson at 8.7M.
-Personally, I think this trade would be a disaster for Ottawa long term due to the possibility of undermining the new leadership group they built by bringing back the old captain who the entire organization was previously built around. It sure would be fun though.

This is actually pretty palatable for all involve. Nicely done.

OTT gets a little bit of a deal, but Karlsson maintaining this type of play for the next number of years isn't guarantee. SJ gets 3 firsts and a decent young F, and the necessary cap dump.

And SJ still gets a first ++ and even possibly + for Meier

I would say San Jose are the biggest winners in this trade if you think insiders are accurate about Karlsson still being impossible to move. Where San Jose is right now in their rebuild, Karlsson giving them this level of play is irrelevant since they aren't sniffing the playoffs. If anything, it's a detriment since they would probably be guaranteed the best odds are Bedard or Fabtelli if not for Karlsson.

Walking away with multiple 1sts to dump 75 percent of Karlsson's contract should be seen as the best case scenario. Zaitsev would be gone in a year. While Joseph likely has negative value, he is still a serviceable third liner who might put up points on a rebuilding San Jose. So taking him as a cap dump to facilitate the trade is not ideal for San Jose, but he isn't an anchor.

Ottawa takes the most risk, because if Karlsson gets hurt or regresses, they are stuck. Not to mention the possible issues with disrupting their current order of leadership. At the same time, Ottawa gets the most reward. This trade would also be a huge deal and at least in the short term re-engage the fan base.

I seen on twitter that many gms consider EK65 still as "negative value" despite the great season he's having. Obviously I don't have any inside knowledge or anything, but I feel like this would be a massive over pay for him if those rumors are true. I also don't understand why I keep seeing trades involving Debrincat. Has he publicly expressed his disappointment with the team?
