This definitely feels like a trade Sharks would take. Like you said, giving up alot but I can't think of a team that needs Meier more. Perfect fit.

One note: can they do 8x$8 mil or 8x$9 mil next year on the cap?

Flames are probably the only team in the league that should consider doing that. I don't think the other offers from SJ get this high, and I think even then maybe just do the extra 1st instead of one of the prospects. But the flames have made their bed. Their window is now.

That's just it, the Flames would have to send a roster player with term and a decent salary back to afford Meier past this season, maybe even two. It would make it a bit complicated from the Sharks perspective but they could flip any roster players the Flames include for more.

A more feasible deal for Calgary with cap considerations would be something like Mangiapane, Zary, Kylington, and maybe a conditional second that turns into a 1st if Kylington doesn't come back. Not sure if that's the best offer on the table for the Sharks though if they're looking purely for futures.

They can't afford him next year so no they definitely should not consider this

The Flames can't resign him so they would need to shed salary or trade his rights without leverage. If Meier takes his QO they need to pay 10MM and if he doesn't it is just Tkachuk round two.

I guess there is a scenario where Calgary trades him for similar to what Fiala go. Like the Flames next year. Minnesota did not have anywhere close to enough cap space to sign Fiala when they moved him to LA. They did get a decent return though but I feel like that is not the approach Calgary shpuld take here

I agree. While it is great to recoup some assets, Calgary needs to either extend its window of contention or conceed defeat and rebuild. Since Calgary never rebuilds, they should look at upgrading that top line. However, they need to clear Cap space to do that, which means sending Salary back to San Jose, as well as Salary elsewhere. I would love to see Cornato in a flames uniform, I don't think he will sign with us, and we can't risk another Erixon/Fox situation. If Calgary gets Meier, two trade will need to happen: one now, and one in the summer. Our Blueline is too expensive to be performing like this.
