Murray Buyout assuming the worst

Created by: PeterK
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 9, 2023
Published: Feb. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Wishful thinking I know, But depending on a couple key guys and their asks.. it might be possible to keep the band together next year and going forward provided the cap rises as predicted or more. Murray buyout $2M is rough the 2nd season but I think it will have to be done. Should be covered by the cap increase. Then all you have to worry about is Sandin and Liljegren.

Not enough for Meier. Trade value or AAV. Bunting gets more too.

Even if everyone takes this team, you're running a 20-man roster. Unless Matthews or Nylander are coming off the books the following season, there's no way to sustain this. Even with a 5m raise it would likely be very tight.

Filip Forsberg comparable. Yes, I initially had him at $8M but just saying, it's almost there. Maybe he'd be up for it.

If Bunting gets more he does NOT get term. My thinking is that he wants to play here, he will get paid well and get to play with incredible players for the rest of his career. He is not a star in his own right but is a good complimentary piece. Can't overpay those guys in a hard cap system. Fact is Toronto doesn't need him and if they pay him more it doesn't actually help them.

Also, I'd actually be in favour of NOT signing him and just slot in Jarncrok until Knies is ready.

I don't think Bunting will get a lot more. But I think Dubas is making a big mistake giving him 8 years. Holland once gave Abdelkader 7 years and the Red Wings are still paying for it. Literally.

Forsberg would be the guy that his side would bring to arbitration, but the team would bring Fiala. Career-wise his goal scoring is between Fiala and Forsberg, and his point production is slightly under Fiala's, Forsberg is closer to what DeBrincat was for points. So, something like 7.8-8m is more reasonable but with his QO he does have some power, that being said if Toronto gets him for a 1st+3rd+Niemela that's not way too much for a pure rental. He is a scoring power forward though, so he would be coveted but doubt he gets more than 9mx7 on the open market which is equivalent to 7.875mx8.

This would only be worth it for the Leafs if he and Bunting are taking less such that there is 750k-1m on the table still.

Yeah, not unless the AAV is like 3m, 7 years would be way too much.

I don't think Leafs fans could tolerate those hideous eyebrows for 7-8 more years.

Meier not taking under 8 when Horvat got 8.5M and doing in tax land canada. B level prospect and a low 1st not getting it done. Before you ask we dont want or need Robertson. he can reside on your LTIR

B level prospect? I think you are mistaken about that.
