Is he worth the waiver claim

Created by: CapFriendlysFinest
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 10, 2023
Published: Feb. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I highly doubt he would make it to the Leafs if/when he is placed on waivers. Would you take a shot at him with just this year remaining at 3 million and a RFA after?

No, I wouldn’t. If we could bury him on Marlies (potential playoff call up in case of injury) maybe but waiver wire doesn’t work that way (I think?). If we pick him up, really limits what else we can do @ TDL.
In the off season, I’d take a chance on him b/c Leafs have shown their player development staff is first rate - they’ve made a lot of wingers a lot of money . And sounds like he just needs a change of scenery for whatever reason

Smart thinking on trying to get him during the off season. I really like the idea with him over the playoffs because of how good defensively he is but he couldn't buy a goal right now. Understand money is better spent elsewhere this deadline.

I would have to agree with MitchJr.

Another potential option is to acquire him on TDL Day at 50% retention if he gets claimed by a team willing to move him.

thats easier said that done. There are rules about trading a waiver claim player the same season. If a team trades a player that they claimed, they have to first offer them to the other teams who put claims on him before they can move him.

I believe there is a timeline that a player can be traded after claimed, I am trying to find if its the same 30 days 10 games rule.
There are roughly 10 games until the deadline for many teams. So that could be another wrinkle

I don't think Puljujarvi would make it to Toronto if he ever found himself on waivers. I don't see teams like Arizona, Chicago, or San Jose not taking a chance on Puljujarvi since they're nowhere near their contending windows. Arizona especially as he could get top 6 time to possibly find his game playing with Keller or Schmaltz.

Totally agree, think he would fit in great in Arizona tbh
