If Dubas just tinkers

Created by: TML_GM
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 10, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the Leafs are keeping things low key and not trading firsts/top prospects this TDL, then tehy will have to try and grab some lower-tier options if they want to make some of the following improvements to their lineup:

- Upgrade on Jarnkrok for 2LW
- Defensive/Physical D bottom or middle pairing
- Physical bottom 6 forward with either some offensive or defensive acumen
- 3C to bump Kampf to 4C or an upgrade on 4C
- Depth goalie (AHL) with NHL experience (if Woll fails to impress) as Murray insurance

This is just one example using lower-tier UFAs. Values are estimated as always. I'm sure many will disagree (which is fine). The specific players here are just examples of filling the needs the team has, there are other options and configurations of course.

In this example Holl as a 7th D at 2M isn't ideal, but hey it is nice to have good options and there was cap with retention.

Would be wasteful to call up Knies just to play him in a grinder role with Kampf.

Knies is a signing, not a call up. It is unlikely he goes to the Marlies as he will want to try and burn that first year of his ELC to sign. The idea would be to see how he acclimatizes to NHL minutes on the 4th line and PP2. If he excels, move him up to 3LW, then perhaps 2LW. Hard to make a case until we see him play at the NHL level. He may not even be able to hang and doesn't make the lineup.

Canucks are opposed to trading Schenn now, and rightfully so. He makes Hughes better and is a cheap, effective leader that is liked by the team and coaches. It’s gonna take more than a third and a C level prospect to pry him away. Starts with a second or Niemela.

Your Barby offer is already an also-ran.

Values vary and if they want to hold onto him that's certainly an option. They can ask for a higher price, but it is unlikely any contender is going to pay that for Schenn as they all have solid D cores already. While he is a top-pairing D on Vancouver, on a contending team he is a 5/6/7 at best. His low cap hit, physicality, and experience drive his value. He can always return to Vancouver next season (as that would likely be his preferred signing destination), so they would be wise to take the best offer they receive and bring him back in my opinion. Hughes will be fine without him for the last 25% of this season I'm sure.

Detroit declines, not using up a retention slot for a 7th round pick.

Hawks decline. They'll get better offers for Domi half retained

I think he can make an impact but he won’t do it with Kampf cuz that’s a defensive role. He needs to play alongside guys wit higher levels of playmaking & puck carrying such as Jarnkrok/Kerfoot to be able to stay. Very similar profile to Lafreniere.
