That's tempting. I think I'd do it. Hate to lose Hronek but Lilly bags has really improved this season. I don't think Leaf fans would do it.

Wouldn't be a smart idea on the Leafs part. The benefit of having Liljegren on a value contract vs getting Hronek would probably be a marginal to no, net upgrade for the duration of their contracts. Sundqvist is as valuable (or less) to the Leafs as Kerfoot is to Detroit beyond this season. Leafs would probably prefer Kerfoot over him but there is the addition of Bertuzzi. So, it really just comes down to if they Leafs would give up Knies+Niemela for Bertuzzi. I don't think they would, but they might as well drop Hronek and Liljegren from this trade, and perhaps Kerfoot and Sundqvist as well.

No thanks, Chiarot and Maatta have as many points as Liljegren. And no way is Yzerman retaining on Hronek for the next 1.5 years. Hronek is by far having his best year as a Red Wing. While i like Timothy Liljegen i'm not moving Filip Hronek for him.

Not so sure. You won't find many Hronek supporters like me out there, and I was excited to see him return to the form I expected of him after his first couple seasons. He was lights out top pairing to start the year, but he has cooled off as Seider has heated up. I have no explanation as to why.

My thing with Hronek is he has been plagued by inconsistent plays his entire career, and his play often decides games for better or worse. He can be Mr reliable defensively for 22 minutes, but he is glaringly out of position for two goals against; or he can be a black hole for offensive production all game, but he directly affects his team scoring 3 goals via 3 great passes or shots. I've never thought Hronek was bad. I'd hoped he could settle in as a 1B (like Kronwall or Chelios to Lidstrom). Instead I think he will be a 2nd pairing guy who relies heavily on chemistry with his D partner.

In this proposal, Toronto gets the best defenseman. Liljigren is a downgrade, but his cap hit won't be as bad as Hronek's next deal. Niemela has yet to play in NA. He should be NHL ready in 2 years. You'd have a heck of a D group by then, with Seider, Wallinder, Johansen, Edvinsson, Liljigren, and hopefully Niemela.

Knies seems like a pretty good middle 6, maybe top 6.

This is a good trade for Detroit, and a good one for Toronto now. I don't know if the Toronto prospects line up with Yzerman's plans to compete though...2-3 years?

Leaves fans probably don't do the DET deal, but it's also severely under selling Hronek by himself. Pass.

Detroit declines.

1. Kerfoot and Sundqvist can be compared to each other but Sunny is cheaper and will be easier to resign to a good deal and he shoots right while Kerfoot shoots left and we only have two other right shooters.

2. Hronek vs. Liljegren. Hronek has scored 33 points so far this season and Timmy has scored 13. OP also wants retention for next year on Hronek. That's a no deal.

3. Bertuzzi vs. Knies + Niemelä. Niemelä is playing in Finland and not doing anything special there. Knies is doing well in university but Bert is playing top wing in the NHL and OP wants retention on him too. No deal.

Detroit would be saying goodbye to 70 scoring points annually as well as using up all of their retention slots this year and one next year while still having 11 players on expiring contracts that needs to be traded.

There is no guarantee that Niemelä ever makes the NHL. There's no guarantee that Knies even wants to sign with Detroit, he can play out college and become an UFA if he wants and Detroit can not stop him.

Sunny for Kerfoot falls on the cost and the right/left handedness.

Hronek for Timmy falls on the retention and scoring.

Bert for Knies and Niemelä falls on the retention and the uncertainty of quality and availability of offered players.
