The biggest problem here is we have too many LD already and we need RD. Maybe if you add Beauvillier and a 2nd for Matheson it would make more sense from the Habs perspective.

I agree we have to many LD. Couldn’t find an overpaid RD that could go one for one with Gallagher. Overall I can’t see Hughes retaining any salary on Gallagher or paying to get rid of him. A buyout would be a salary cap disaster, so a one for one trade with similar salaries is the only real option to unload Gallagher.

As a Canuck fan when I saw this I was like yes! But I didn't realize there is very little difference in their cap hits and at least OEL is on the ice playing. He's terrible but at least he's available which is more then I can say about Gallagher. Both contracts are terrible and unmovable for each team. I don't know if it would matter but OEL can play the right side and has at different points in his career.

Gallagher is easier to hide in a lineup, and is heading towards LTIR retirement in a year or two. Habs keep Gally.

I just don't see the point for either team. At least with Gally there's a chance he becomes perma-LTIR'd. I'd prefer that to OEL even though I'd say he's probably a little better overall than Gally is right now.

Yeah you are probably right. But look at what Hughes did with Weber’s contract. Maybe a trade like that happens in a couple years.

Gallagher potentially going on LTIR for retirement would be Vancouver’s reasoning. As for the habs, maybe OEL could resurrect his career playing for St Louis on a lower expectations, rebuilding habs team. With the habs likely trading Edmundson this year and Savard next year, they still need a couple veteran defencemen not named Wideman to play with all the young guys, plus I think OEL has the higher potential of being worth something at the 2026 trade deadline than Gallagher does.

Except Habs are in more of a rebuild than Vancouver is. They have more reasoning to keep Gallagher for that reason than Van does but even if they're both in the same boat, IMHO I'd rather just keep Gallagher. He's cheaper and Habs blueline is already packed as is.
