Fine middle to bottom pair defenseman who has played well in Newsey's system. Detroit still has cap room to burn over the next two seasons so its not like extending Maatta will prevent them from doing anything significant in that timeframe.

People who voted “no” have clearly not watched a wings game this year. He easily gets more term and money on the open market.

Great signing. I'm a big Wings fan and have watched most of their games this year, he's been a great addition to their blue line. The fact that before this signing he was in the rumor mills as deadline bait tells you what you need to know about his play this year.

Decent signing in a vacuum, but I thought he was getting traded for sure. Paying Chiarot and Maatta a combined 7.7 mil is pretty bad though and is definitely deserving of some criticism

I agree that the Chiarot signing looks pretty poopy at this point, but that combined figure is also just short of what Toronto is paying Holl and Brodie. So at some point, this is just the going rate for established blue liners in the show. Now is that money well spent? Therein lies the eternal debate

That's pretty rich coming from somebody who thinks a team that isn't up against the cap is going to dump an expiring contract at the deadline.

Maatta has played at a very high level on the 2nd pairing with Hronek, which he’s done for about half the season. The rest of the time on the 3rd pairing with Lindstrom or Oesterle, he hasn’t faired quite as well.

I’m not thrilled with this signing. I had hoped he was traded (still do), but it isn’t necessarily a bad signing.

Where does this leave pending UFA, Walman? Is he traded? We have Edvinsson coming up next year, there has to be a spot for him. Wallinder & Johannsen could also be up sooner than later as well. LHD logjam.

Better than Chiarot, and still 1,5 mil cheaper.

Not the greatest signing but far from the worst.

I'm a bit surprised I was sure he was trade deadline fodder and Walman was the one being resigned. Walman Chairot Edvinsson seemed like the left for next year. I wonder if something else is happening here.

Maatta seems fine right now in Detroit, but he's a journeymen D who has bounced around a bit recently, and seems like a fit as a 3rd pair guy who can slide up when needed on a contender.

Right now he's Detroit's 4th most used defender (on a per game basis), but their D is still collectively awful, so you would think he really needs to slot down further if they brought in the appropriate talent to slot everyone appropriately. $3M for a 3rd pair D isn't an ideal use of cap space for a young team. It's 2 years, it won't be a deal that ever derails the rebuild entirely, and they need someone to hold them over, but I think the ceiling for this deal is mild overpay to be honest.

Reality is, until the end of the 2024-25 season, Detroit has committed more than $7M to two D that are best suited for the bottom pair. That seems like some pretty significant wasted cap space.

Not the greatest signing but not a terrible one. I voted no bc they could have gotten a lot of value for him (maybe this was the best option IDK) but his play can easily change my mind over the next 2 years

I think this deal would have been fine had it been a one year deal. Just hope it doesnt stunt the ice time for Edvinsson next year since he's been on fire in the AHL.

Well, so much for the Olli-back-to-LA ideas.

He'll be fine for the two-season length of this contract.
