Interesting concept. I think it complicates an already extremely complicated trade to begin with tho haha

Yeah Chiarot isn't waiving for San Jose.

And why would Yzerman eat $3,450,000 x 4.5 years just to unload on Chiarot for nothing? Talk about bad asset management.

Credit to you for creativity. But it's a pass for me.

Why would we retain $3.5m for 4 years and end up with nothing, when Chiarot has only 3 years left on his deal and if we retained 50% of his deal for just his remaining 3 years, we could probably get something for him instead of nothing

He might not want to play hockey on that team, but he might really like California living...

Think about it a little deeper. You'll pay a guy like Edvinsson $925k in replacement of Chiarot for 3 years on his ELC. $925k + $3.45M (Karlsson retention) = $4.375M for Edvinsson instead of Chiarot ($375k savings for 3 years for a higher quality player). The 4th year of Karlsson's retention could be problematic, but the cap should go up significantly by then, so I don't think it's an issue.

You and i know that Yzerman isn't wasting 4.5 years of a retention spot without some heavy assets coming back. Retention like that would cost at least 2 1st probably one of Bouchard/Broberg and or Holloway. Yzerman isn't doing any favors to Ken Holland.

It is different if the trade is as follows:

    To Detroit:
4 years of $4M of EK65 cap retention
    '23 or '24 1st (EDM) - if Bouchard then '24
    Evan Bouchard or Xavier Bourgault
    Poolparty or Warren Foegele

    To EDM:
    EK65 @ $7.5 for 4 years
    Matt Benning
    Nick Bonino

    To SJ:
    '23 1st (EDM) - if Bourgault then '23
    '23 2nd (EDM)
    '23 3rd (DET)
    Ben Chariot (3 years left)
    Tyson Barrie
    Xavier Bourgault or Evan Bouchard

Detroit would be making out just as much in this scenario as SJS due to SJS not retaining anything on EK65, thus that is why you see (1) high prospect being on the Wings not both being on SJS. For EDM to get EK65 @ $7.5M they will need to give up a ton, which they have (2) 1sts, some cap dumps and (2) higher prospects, but the 1sts will need to be split to SJS for giving up EK65 and the Wings for taking on the cap hits.

To me, this is the only way it makes sense for all teams.
