Optimistic Sellers

Created by: PanarinBread72
Team: 2022-23 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2023
Published: Feb. 18, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is definitely an optimistic look at a selling team, but I don't think it's too unreasonable to happen. I don't expect all of these deals to happen, moreover, I doubt the Hawks team will look this awful after the deadline. Obviously depends on Kane and Toews wanting out.
Trades
1.
CHI
  1. Holl, Justin
  2. Niemelä, Topi
  3. 2023 6th round pick (TOR)
  4. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
1st round pick is lottery protected. Obviously, the return depends on whether Holl blocks a trade to Chicago. Kerfoot could be added to deal in order to make Toronto cap compliant.
TOR
  1. Lafferty, Sam
  2. McCabe, Jake ($2,000,000 retained)
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
While the cost is high, the Leafs get two good and affordable depth pieces with term.
2.
CHI
  1. Bourgault, Xavier
  2. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Lottery protected pick. 4th round pick goes to 3rd team involved, who retains 25% of Kane's contract.
EDM
  1. Kane, Patrick ($5,250,000 retained)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
The other team involved in this deal is unimportant, this is just the type of return that is possible for Kane.
3.
CHI
  1. Helm, Darren
  2. 2023 1st round pick (COL)
  3. 2023 5th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Pick is lottery protected
COL
  1. Toews, Jonathan ($5,250,000 retained)
  2. 2024 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
EDM 4th gets moved to 3rd team for salary retention, hawks get 5th from COL to compensate them. Most seem to expect a smaller return for Toews, but I personally find it unlikely that Chicago moves him for less than a first round pick, and a healthy Colorado team should make a deep playoff run, making this a late pick.
4.
CHI
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (NJD)
  2. 2023 4th round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Domi, Max
  2. 2023 6th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Not much more to be said. Domi is having a good year, and should probably get a 2nd rounder plus more from a contender.
5.
CHI
  1. Smith, Craig
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (BOS)
BOS
Hawks likely add a player like Smith in a cap dump to make the team look less embarrassing.

Why is BOS dumping a pending UFA?
Keep pick and keep Smitty for playoffs, then let him be a UFA July 1...

Toews has 2 more pts in 4 more games than Erod, 4 less pts in 7 less games than Compher and he is a shell of himself defensively. Throw in COL isn’t trading their 23 1st for a rental and that’s a pretty easy no.

Leafs don't need Lafferty. Make it just a straight 1st for McCabe at 50% retained and I'd take that deal and ship off Holl separately for assets or keep Holl and ship off Benn if we don't make any moves up from since we have enough space to take a 1.25M cap increase

McCabe isn't good enough to warrant that price. He's not great defensively, is less physical than Sandin and he's not really big either. He's just not at all what TO needs.

I could be wrong but most analytics like above that I've seen have him as one of the top defensive D in the league.

You could have at least thrown JJ into that Colorado deal. Even then it should still be a hefty helping of Nope!

There's "optimistic" then there's "delusional". This is more of the latter.

I think Kane sucks this year, but I still think there's a good chance that Chicago gets a haul for him from a GM like Holland who's stuck in the past. Plus, I think that the chance of Kane and McDavid/Drai on a line would be hard to pass on if they don't get Karlsson.

Using points is not a fair comparison, considering that Toews has played for a far worse team. Toews has had a lot of reported interest from contenders that could drive his price up, and there have been several far worse rentals dealt for first rounders in recent years. While not the player he used to be, Toews is still a valuable player that any contender would be thrilled to have as a middle six center.

Yeah, I probably should've looked more at Toronto's forward depth. Lafferty probably won't help too much this season, but I still think it's possible that Toronto trades for him knowing that he has another year left at a cheap AAV. Maybe Chicago could package him with Kane or Toews to get a better return elsewhere.

Doesn't have to be Boston dumping Smith. I was just giving an example of a trade that Chicago could make to take advantage of their cap space.

The only thing is Holland is very against trading high picks for rentals, adding in Bourgault (who he took a MASSIVE risk trading down from Wallstedt on in 2021) is probably a non-starter for him... but who knows.

Edmonton is more likely in on Toews at 50% who they could acquire for a 2nd plus a mid-bottom 6 guy (foegele, Pulji, etc...) and then send a 4th for another 50% retention on him.

    Okay, but...
You still need to make an offer back to the "club" of choice..."air" is not a tradeable NHL commodity (Bettman is likely looking into it however for a new revenue stream)!

Not a team that’s only pick in the 23 draft is a first. COL for practical reasons can’t trade their 23 1st because then they would be completely passing on 2 drafts, throw in a depleted prospect pool and if they are trading that first they need to get more than 25 games and a playoff run. COL’s roster is getting expensive and will get more expensive next year. I’m not saying Toews wouldn’t help but imo COL is looking guys that cost less.
