Description
Looking forward to next season, with the Canes acquiring Meier at this upcoming deadline for a Cup run. I've seen a wide range of returns for Meier, this one falls somewhere in the middle based on a few factors. I have the trade happening without an extension in place, which seems to be more of a sticking point for New Jersey than it is for the Canes. Also no salary retention on Meier for this season and no money tied up going the other way. Reports seem to indicate that Nikishin is not available, so I included the Canes other top D prospect Morrow. I could see SJ pushing for the Canes '24 1st instead of Philly's 2nd, ideally there's only a ~10 pick difference between the two. Canes would have to negotiate an extension after the season, but most players seem to like it once they're here and I think the extension figure is fair.

I have the Canes bringing back Pacioretty based on some recent comments from the owner. Due to consecutive achilles injuries I have him on a one year prove it deal. Otherwise the Canes could look elsewhere for that spot, with $4-5 million or so there should be some pretty decent options. Given where Jordan Staal is in his career and coming off the end of a 10 year contract, I can see him signing a shorter term deal for a little less $ to stay with the Canes. I'd like to upgrade the 3rd D pair, without signing DeHaan there's a little over $2.5 million available on that spot but I didn't spend a ton of time looking for a specific name so just plugged him back in. Things will get very tight after the 2024 season so hopefully two playoff runs with Meier in the fold before the $ crunch will be worth it.

Very reasonable deal I think.

I had suggested Morrow, Blake, 1st, 3rd...so this is pretty close to that.

I don’t think Pacioretty is ever going to play again sadly.

Maybe Drury for Gunler?

Idk most of your guys seem interchangeable but this is a good basis for a deal.

I actually think the Philly second will be more perfered because Greier wants 2023 firsts, and its not too far away from being one.

That's way too much for Patches if he wants to play again.

I can see the Canes giving him something like 1-1.5 at most if he comes back during the middle of the season. They're 100% in to re-signing him for next season if he wants to play.

I could see Staal taking something like 3 million for 2-3 years to end his career here. No need to give him that much.

That may be true. Pretty brutal what's happened to him sadly, it'll probably be into the offseason before there's much clarity on his chances of fully healing and for him to make a decision. More just wanted to highlight the flexibility that exists in that spot with ~$5M available to fill it. There will be other good options I'm sure.

You may be right. I don't think anyone can reasonably say what the prognosis or timeline for Pacioretty will be right now, but if he gets a clean bill of health and is motivated to play I didn't want to look like I was lowballing him. Same with Staal, I originally had him in the $3-4M range as that wouldn't surprise me. But its easy to undervalue contracts when doing a mock like this to make the job seem easy, I wanted to see how even in more of a worst case scenario the cap still works and there is room to add/improve. Depending on what happens with Patches, I also like a guy like Tomas Tatar for that spot at a similar $ figure, so you could stick his name there if you prefer.

Yeah I debated between Drury, Gunler, Suzuki, etc. I could see a variation on the deal but I think the basis is close.

Drury I see as more of a higher floor bottom 6 guy that I think the Canes might value to fill out the bottom of their lineup at a low cost soon as the roster flirts with the cap. Gunler I think has more upside as a scorer but also more risk, so depends on where the Sharks priorities are at. I can see some back and forth over that kind of discussion but shouldn't be enough to hold up a deal.

No it shouldnt. The only hold up here is Morrow. Hes had a down year and Im not sure hes a Grier type player.

It really depends on the sharks internal evaluation of him.

I think something like this makes a ton of sense for both teams, but price only works if Canes are able to extend Meier. Maybe the 2nd pick is conditional to Meier signing?

Canes have a window and need a move like this now and someone who'll at least be back next season. A big additional long term contract though will likely mean that the Canes won't be able to sign extension to somebody among Pesce, Skjei, Turbo, Jarvis, or Necas.
