they should - it would be a huge missed opportunity. Isles won't make the playoffs this year and for at least the next 3-4 years after this.

part of being a GM is being realistic about your teams present and future outlook. The isles have less than a 5% chance at making the playoffs. Not getting assets for varlamov and mayfield would make no sense

They are in a playoff spot. If they start winning more games...

You guys have got to stop with the nonsensical (for Los Angeles) UFA-Varlamov-for-Petersen-and-the-2023-first-round-draft-pick idea.

they have played 3-4 more games then most teams around them . The isles are a terrible hockey team, they aren't going on a 10 game winning streak to grab a spot.

I don't see how its unrealistic. LA has terrible goaltending, it's their main issue and varlamov is a top 10 goaltender.

I do think that’s what it would cost to dump Petersen, but I also believe LAK is NOT open to dumping him.

I don't see how its unrealistic. LA has terrible goaltending, it's their main issue and varlamov is a top 10 goaltender.

Even assuming that he's a top 10 goaltender, on July 2 he's not a top 10 goaltender playing on the Kings. THAT's why we're not surrendering a first for him. And don't tell me (like the LAST Islander fan who argued this with me) that "you could just re-sign him," because my reply is going to be "Oh, you mean just like you guys could just re-sign John Tavares?"

Even on the surface, this idea is poor. Right now, Petersen costs us $3.875 million against the cap. With this deal, Varlamov with retention plus Petersen's retention costs us $5.25 million against the cap. And this would require carrying three goalies on the roster or waiving one of Copley (unthinkable) or Quick (unspeakable). And then on September 1, we have nothing to show for this deal except $3.875 million of cap space and you have the LhD we so desperately need in the pipeline and would have drafted with that pick in YOUR training camp.

The reason why this idea is nonsense for the Kings is because the premise is faulty: Petersen's cap hit doesn't need to be disappeared because it's parked in Ontario.

LA has already said that they're not interested in a rental goaltender.
