Description
Ok so we’ve reached a sticking point where we walk away from the Meier trade. Mercer being the ask “as part of a package” speaks for itself. I’ve taken the approach of willing to give to get, but Hughes/Nemec/Mercer are too important to the team going forward. I understand why SJ is asking for the moon, but we need to politely walk away. So where do we pivot? Kane doesn’t fit a non rental and Boeser is a large cap hit and his plays been very bleh the last few years. So as much as I know a lot of our fans want a big move, I think it needs to wait. We’ll be better off in the long run doing it this way.

$12 million?!

Maybe $10m but $12m seems like a bit much, especially with new cap uncertainty for next couple of years.

Gonna take big money to get him away from Boston and whoever else wants him if he reaches UFA. It’s a tight stretch cap wise but we can do it at $12 mil

With talk now of the cap *going down* next year due to the loss of a dozen regional broadcast networks, I would be surprised if he got more than $10m.

Well we’re going to have to see where things stand prior to UFA, but I’m going off that 83.5 cap number for the time being. Of course if the cap sinks, the number would go down, but we shall see

Not sure I would do a 3rd for Walsh but I don’t think it’s far off. Unproven at the nhl level and is 24 in a month

Something in that range is what we’d be looking for, he’s in purgatory here. Needs to be moved so he can get a legit opportunity. I know from the Timo talks you’d like some RD options so figured it’s a match

Really? wow! Hadn't heard that one yet. Do you by chance have any articles or 'capologists' you can link me to that outline the details of the stagnant salary cap, payments, escrow, etc? Because I only vaguely understand what is going on with all of that and I would like to know more.

Rebuilding Hawks team isn't trading picks for players, especially not for RFA rights to a struggling goalie they don't need.

There is an emergency BOG meeting this week to talk about it. So not numbers or anything have been released.

Honestly I’ll send him to whoever will take him, it doesn’t matter who. Also willing to eject him into the sun if that’s a feasible option

I just mean a general outline of what exactly is going on. I know it is something to do with paying down the escrow on... ?something?, before the cap can start to rise again.

Nevermind. I found an article that sort of explains what was going on. I had heard people reference it a million times very vaguely, but I never knew what it was actually for. https://puckprose.com/2022/10/22/nhl-salary-cap-increase/

It’s all related to Bally’s, who recently defaulted on a debt payment and are likely heading to bankruptcy. They are the regional broadcaster for a dozen teams, so contribute a good chunk of “hockey related revenue”. It’s all come in for 2022-23, but the league is now expecting a decline in HRR which will lead to at least a flare cap…maybe even reduction in cap (which would likely come with a compliance buy out this summer). If it becomes a simple fix to find new broadcasters, and replace the revenue, they could stick to $1 million increase, but would also delay the escrow completions, so would be adding another 2-3 years of $1m or less increases.

I'd do 12m if that's what it took

Sure. I was just wondering what this debt was from in the first place. Didn't realize it was from the players still being paid during the pandemic. Hopefully they can figure this out though. Maybe ESPN and/or NBC will swoop in.
