Strange Not Trading Zaitsev Anymore

Created by: Rooster
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2023
Published: Feb. 23, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It's so weird not having to trade Zaitsev and a 2nd to Anaheim/Arizona/Chicago anymore. Dorion did it, but as per usual, paid more by adding a 4th. Can't wait for new owners to sack him and DJ.

Next steps: 1. new owners, 2. fire Dorion and DJ, 3. Hire Jacques Martin as POHO, 4. Hire Barry Trotz as GM (he apparently wants a more senior management role), 5. Hire an experienced, proven NHL coach.

Trade for him, then trade him again to ease your mind. That's what I did...

I'm actually impressed that AGGM managers were pretty close on the cost and the team that would acquire him.

To me it seemed like he was hoping that around this time he could be taking Keefe's job as the coach of the Leafs or Gallant when both teams were struggling earlier in the year. I think from there he would have hoped to find himself in a managing role in the following year either as an advisor to GM in NYR since the leash is going to start getting short for Drury soon enough, or as the GM of the Leafs if the Leafs failed to pass the first round under him.

Now he probably just waits for them to fail in Toronto and become GM next year. If that happens maybe, Dubas+Keefe get hired in Ottawa and get them to the playoffs.

Could be. The dominos will be interesting for sure. If the Leafs choke in Round 1 again, then Dubas and Keefe are toast. I could see Trotz finding that role appealing. I like Dubas and what he's done in Toronto, but I'm curious to see how the Ottawa market would respond to hiring him so shortly after his unsuccessful tenure in Toronto.

Whoever gets hired, I think it would be an absolute homerun to hire Jacques Martin as the President of Hockey Operations, where he can mentor/work with a new GM, coach and the hockey ops department.

Yeah, Trotz would definitely be interested he talked about how it takes special players and special coaches and GM to work in Toronto and New York, and how he would like to coach again (this year after winter) or go into management. The timing of his comments were too convenient when he made them imo, since both teams were having rough patches.

Honestly, Dubas has done a really good job in Toronto for a new GM, just hasn't been able to get the results done, he might not get the GM role but some team somewhere will definitely hire him. If Ottawa can get him for cheap, I think they do it. Dubas+Keefe have won on every level except the NHL, they figured out the regular season, it's the post-season success that evades them. I think the goal for new ownership will just be to get the Sens into the playoffs. Based off what you said, it sounds to me that Jacques Martin+Dubas+Keefe might be able to turn this team around.

The Sens core is locked already, so there's no worries about Dubas giving the teams stars too much money.
