Huge overpayment by Boston for lower tier plays. Leafs got ROR + Acciari for a similar package

I read there's double retention involved. With Wild.

In any case, I think all teams here are winners. WSH gets a really solid return, BOS has now easily the most stacked D-core in the league, and MIN keeps piling picks.

It’s a lot to pay, but ultimately it makes Boston better and that’s all that matters. Boston is really scaring me, they don’t look like they can be beat.

Maybe weighted a little to the caps but they retained and took smith. Boston has no choice really they have to go for it.

A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for 2 guys on expiring deals is solid. Sad to see this is probably the start of the rebuild though.

Seattle got two 2nds + a 3rd in exchange for Giordano and Blackwell.

Washington got an unconditional 1st in a deep draft + a 2nd + a 3rd + Craig Smith in exchange for Orlov and Hathaway.

And after retaining a small portion of Orlov's salary, Minnesota got a 5th for a guy drafted in the 6th round back in 2017 and who never signed his ELC.

This is not a fair deal for Boston.

The Washington Capitals and Minnesota Wild win the trade.

Part of it may have to do with jettisoning Smith’s contract.

Boston gets more grit and becomes tougher. Pretty fair trade, Boston gets their playoff guys and Washington gets picks for rentals.

The Cost of rentals at the TD...

Boston - Get a proven top 4 defensemen who can play tough minutes and get the job done. Get a bottom 6 forward who brings energy to your team. Both UFA's so no long term implications. Their last hooray before they need a complete tear down.
Washington - Get a massive haul for 2 pending UFA's to help rebuild their non existent prospect core. Smith gives them a replacement for Hathaway to help them remain competitive in the playoff race
Minnesota - Gets another pick to retain salary which doesn't affect them whatsoever.

No it isnt. A bunch of late picks for legit playoff performers in their prime. Good work by Sweeney not to give up a prospect. Who cares about these picks with their core aging. It works for both teams. I would have given up prospects if I was Holland. Another fail by Ken

While other teams will battle to get Gavrikov for a 1st, Boston got Orlov+, a No 2 defenceman, for a similar price (27th OA at best). And they will probably resign him, cause that what they do.

This is a better move than ROR!

YES! Much better. Masterclass by Sweeney. Left all the hype to the side and striked when Orlov/Hathaway became available.

That's the problem. Two of the picks are for the next couple of years, so they will likely be rather good picks in the second and third rounds.
