Laraque says Matheson on the block

Created by: jonh514

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 24, 2023
Published: Feb. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Big George Laraque says Montreal golden boy Matheson is on the block. I am really surprised, though with Edmundson not getting traded and supposedly back next season, maybe it makes sense to trade a LHD.

Who would be interested? What is he worth? FYI if the offer is less than a 1st or a prospect worth a 1st, no way the Habs do this.

What do you guys think?

Let me guess. He's getting back a 1st like Edmundson? 😉

I would not trade him at all. He's by far the best defenseman on the team. But I certainly would not trade him for less than a 1st.

It's just funny reading CFACGM lately. Apparently Jensen is getting back a 1st. Gavrikov is getting a 1st. Lots of 1sts are apparently moving in a very deep draft.

He's very good man, not sure what Pitty was thinking. I wouldn't trade him unless it returned a 1st and a high level asset. Good contract too

It makes a weird sense. They wanted to get rid of Eddy. Now they are gonna have to keep him for a year. The cost valuable defenseman they can trade is him, especially if they want to start Edmundson, Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj on the left next year.

Matheson at least has the production to back up getting a strong package - but I think the 3x$4.875M is going to be tough to move in a flat cap environment. Don't know if Edmonton would be the one to pull the trigger, though, seeing as they're already paying Darnell Nurse $9.25M to be LD1 and assumedly will want to give more time to Philip Broberg next season.

Fair point. But maybe they pick him up and flip him or another defenseman at the draft?

Who else might be interested?

I think it's more likely he just stumbled into a right take by accident.

Also the TDL has not passed yet and IF eddy gets back in time they still might be interested. So I wouldn't say Laraque was right just yet.

Fair enough. But I doubt very much HuGo he gets the value he wants on Eddy, but maybe he will on Matheson and then he can hold Eddy until next deadline.

It is extremely unlikely that Eddy is moved this TDL, was just saying that it is still not outside the realm of possibilities lol

But do you mind of buy the narrative that with Guhle coming back and with Harris & Xhekaj solidifying their status as regulars... There is a possibility to trade Matheson without affecting our play next year and also helping bolster our draft position this year (since we will lose more without him) and get another late 1st?

you would think with all these players on MTL worth a first they wouldn't be near the bottom of the standings

In fairness here, I get the feeling that sometimes we collectively overvalue draft picks. Like, from the start of the year up to the deadline last year, there were 7 1sts traded (not all were for 2022, and some were conditional.

Absolutely not saying that I'd ever consider giving giving up a 1st for Matheson.

LHD is jammed with Matheson, Big Ed, Ghule, Harris, Xhekaj (+Hutson, Engstrom and Trudeau in the pipeline)

If you want to convince Struble to sign, you need to show him there is space for him, Like they did with Romanov and Harris...

There is but I think the most likely scenario is Harris gets moved either at the TDL or over the summer. I think for the next 2 maybe 3 years our LD will be Guhle, Matheson/Eddy, Xhekaj until Hutson is ready, so one of Eddy and Matheson will be moved along with Harris

They're late first's mostly. So they're not as valuable as they were 20-30 years ago. But it seems like nowadays any Defenseman with a pulse is worth a 1st at the trade deadline and it never works out that way. A few? Yes. 7-8? No. It's like past history means nothing.

Yeah. You'd think with all the injuries and the all rookie D squad we'd be at the very bottom.

I think LA would be interested in a deal where Sean Walker comes back to Montreal; the need is there, but the cap isn't super willing and there's not a ton of "bad" money that would make sense for them to move (Cal Petersen is an obvious one to move but Montreal has 2 goalies signed with term so it makes no sense to push that move.)

I could also see the Devils being open to a move like that over the summer - Matheson could be a solid replacement for pending UFA Ryan Graves.

I think the term/cap hit combo makes a Matheson move more likely in the summer, anyways - teams will have more flexibility (and aren't going to be locked into buyer/seller mode) so it would open up the market, and potentially the return, for him.

I don't disagree. I'd imagine we'll see a bunch of conditional/protected picks thrown around though.

Doesn't that point kind of prove the fact that Edmunson/Matheson are actually detrimental to the team though? That a bunch of rookies have performed better than they have?

Most trades are done before the trade deadline. I refuse to tune into TSN before 1 PM on deadline Day. There's nothing worse I can think of than listening to the talking heads discussing how great Nick Jensen is for 7 hours and that whichever team gets him will win the Cup.
