8 million for the next 4 years, not a great contract, is it bad enough to be completely dumped for nothing

I think a team will pay assets for him, still a good player, but idk how you value Duchene the player vs Duchene the contract

    What is his value?

CAR will have to pay a 1st to get Jensen with money eaten. That's the rivalry tax.

I think Carolina is fine with that

IMO Duchene's contract doesn't fit with Carolina. Slavin, Jarvis, Necas, and Teravainen all come up before Duchene's 8M comes off the books and it would be a shame if we couldn't resign a couple of these players because of that. Save that money for good deadline rentals or an offseason pickup

Canes fans on CF have previously been pretty vocal about how they don't do rentals.

Very true but based on the rest of what I said, IMO it'd be smarter to take someone with less term whether that be as a UFA, as a trade, or with similar term but less cap restraint

Fair, but the Hurricanes are also a top 3 team right now, this is with a team cap hit of like 72M. They have an extra 10M, which they should weaponize. Go all in, because its quite possible they won't have an opporunity as good as the one they have here

For sure. The next 2 years are so key for this kind of move. I guess my concern is shortening the window to compete by bringing in a player with this kind of money and term, and then not being able to sign a Teravainen / Slavin thereby shortening a potential window.

Don't get me wrong though, a Duchene trade would make Carolina (probably) the most lethal team in the league for a couple years.

Canes will have little interest in paying good assets for Duchene. The cap hit and contract length at his age isn’t in the Canes wheel house
