Why in the actual world would the Sharks do this?
Blacktown liked this.

Sharks have one retention spot left for next year. It's reserved for Karlsson. Regardless, this is a big no.

Because they are trying to move contracts they dont like. They get another player with less term so they can essentially get a cheaper buyout that last half as long, plus they can flip kerf for assets.

This is mostly just re writing what I had here. This isnt hard

Sounds like it may not happen (which frankly is a huge mistake) and we know they want to dump Lebanc

It sure seems to be an expensive and complicated way of moving out an otherwise cheap contract.
They must really not want Labanc in order to go this route.

I mean that what I've heard in the rumour mill.
Also, I don't understand how you think its expensive?

Ok, expensive might be the wrong word.
I mean expensive in as the Sharks are paying 2.45mil to get rid of a contract that is up in just another year, a contract they shouldn't even need to move before that.
And essentially they're doing it for no reward, unless they manage to flip Kerfoot for something.
But if that's the plan, why not just trade a retained Labanc for draft picks or a prospect, something that is of value to them?

I don't know if Labanc has value right now. The cap situation of the league basically has everyone over 3 mil with any term as worthless unless they're a superstar - and then you couple that with the fact that SJ has been driving his value into the ground for at least a year now...

For what it's worth - I do like Labanc and think he is a player with value. I just don't think the present trade market agrees.
