I'd be ok with this and it does seem like a DW move. Acquire a guy that's on the outs with another team.

I'm just still shocked that CAR was notified they're out of the trade before it was made. I really want to know what low ball offer was sent. I think the SJS did get alot, but it wasn't TOP assets.

Flyers retaining 3.5 mil over the next 3 seasons would be absurd if that was the return.

i hope we dont do something as knee jerk as this or JT Miller. Hayes would be a winger anyways.

You think they'd simply take a 1st and a prospect to not only trade one of their only positive assets, but retain what is essentially a middle 6 forward in salary when Fletcher is stubbornly committed to "retooling"? Assuming that JVR returns around a 2nd or so, what's the incentive here for Philly to deal their all star 1C and retain 3 mil over the next 3 years? I would doubt that a late 1st and a prospect would be enough to get them to swallow so much money.

How would this be knee jerk? Or are you secretly in the Canes head office?

Also why would Hayes be a winger? Hed easily be our 2C if you ask me

I'd just add the rumors that PHI was going to potentially buyout Hayes. That's a higher cap hit and longer than retention. That's why this amount was strategic imo. Hayes and Torts aren't getting along, BUT same with Farabee. That's another target CAR might go for. That would be a huge move.

Hayes doesn’t play defense like a center needs, torts even made him a winger. Hayes would be a decent winger add but him and JVR would be redundant. Honestly JVR is too slow to keep up or even worth paying for just to be a PP specialist

Don’t hate it, don’t love it.

Would rather they trade Schmaltz and Gostisbehere.

Don’t see the Flyers retaining 50% on Hayes for 3yrs, maybe 20-25%.

I don't think the Canes would need to ask that much retention. If they can get it to $6M even, I think that's manageable. Especially since we're talking about another 3 years.

They would be paying 14 million dollars to get a low end 1st rounder who likely wouldn't be an impact player like Hayes currently is. Most teams when taking a bad contract (look at Arizona with Ricthe or Chicago with Zaitsev) get a 2nd rounder for a bad player with one year remaining. So getting a good second line center for 4 years while retaining 3.5 million for a low 1st and some small pieces is a joke of a return.

So youd wanna wait 3 more years to trade Hayes? when his value will be at his lowest?

Everyone on this site (including me) thinks they know exactly what a player is going to go for. Its hilarious to try and argue the exact value.

Why would the Flyers want to trade him? That's the better question. Hayes just got his first all-star appearance and has 48 points in 60 games. He's a locker room guy and everyone on the teams loves him. He realistically could even be the next captain for the Flyers. I don't think the Flyers are even considering moving him, their entire focus should be fixing that horrendous defence.

I am not saying I also know Hayes exact value, but in the history of the NHL, no team has ever retained that much money for that long. Most money that I can personally think of over more than a year was Kessel when the Leafs retained 1.2 million for 4 years. In that deal, Leafs got a first and a former first rounder from the previous year in Kapanen. Pretty much two 1st rounders for Kessel and 1.2 million in retained salary for 4 years.

Asking for nearly triple the salary retention for less value than the Kessel deal makes no sense.

One right off the top of my head. San Jose is paying Burns almost 3m for 3 more years.
