On the one hand I'm happy for McCabe in that he finally will be getting his 1st taste of playoff hockey.
On the other I feel bad about him going to the playoffs with the Leafs meaning they'll inevitably be bounced in the 1st round.
Hockey gods are cruel sometimes.

Love this trade for the leafs! It's a lot to give up but it's a huge return. Neither player is a rental going forward the leafs are paying them less than 3 million. This is a Tampa Bay move but the leafs didn't overpay! Dubas should keep calling the hawks for trades!

Rumored ask for McCabe with retention was a 1st; and for Lafferty it was a 2nd. I just don't see how you can call it a win for Dubas when he met the asking price for the players - at best you call it a fair deal, but I think I lean Chicago W because Davidson set a price and he got it.

Trade confirmed: Chicago Blackhawks - Toronto Maple Leafs

A defensive heavy hitter defenceman and a decent heavy weight winger. Too much to give for any other team, but with all the skill the Leafs have on wing, center and D, this is legendary haul for a potential Bruins or Tampa series. Leafs look to build a culture of winning in playoffs

When I originally saw this, I thought it was a big package for depth pieces, but McCabe has actually been very good this year and he's retained for next year as well. Solid deal for both sides.

Dubas going ALL IN despite weeks ago saying he wouldn't is comical.

L by Davidson. Mccabe 50% retained for a couple years is worth a first and second alone. Basically making it Lafferrty for an echler and an ahl tweener. Even worse is that CHI wont get those picks for a long time. Davidson couldnt even get 1 player under 21?

Additionally, the players CHI got back are worth literally nothing. An ECHLer and a guy we could have claimed off waivers for free about a week ago. BUT I'd also say that Lafferty for a 2nd was the asking price. Not necessarily how every team felt about him. There have been worse trades. It'll help set up a stable farm system in the long run.

hard to not say Leafs won this trade

i thought / had them getting
McCabe = 1st + 3rd? (kind of wish Washington offer this for him)
Laf = 2nd or 3rd?

add that McCabe got 50% retained. Leafs win this trade bc i think Hawks could have gotten more and Leafs got 2 really good players w term on "cap friendly" deals ( quotes are more for a pun than mocking)

A cheap (with 2 mil retained) top 4 physical defenseman and a cheap bottom 6 physical winger with 2 and 1 extra years. Seems a very good move for the leafs

I gave Dubas the W for all the little stuff. The ask for McCabe was a 1st PLUS with him being 50% retained. Getting the 1st alone, it being years from now, sending the conditional picks back, and the two players going to the Hawks have literally zero value. an ECHLer and a guy they could have claimed off waivers a week ago. There are worse trades. This isn't bad for CHI, but all the little things make it a W for Dubas to me.

Really it was not possible to get more for top 4D with 50% retained for next 2,5 years + speedy 3rd liner and suberb PKiller than conditional 1st in 2032 and 2nd in 2035?
There was no need to trade them with the discount I guess...

I’m not usually a fan of these scenarios but…

Jokiharju —> Alex Nylander —> Lafferty —> 2nd round pick.

As soon as he said he wasn't going all in he was remembered that he could forget a contract extension if he just kept idling.

Toronto's next GM is the biggest looser in this trade.

Only 2 top 60 picks in the next 4 drafts? I see a 1st round exit and a firesale in their future.

You really enjoy hating on the leafs eh?

Why do the Leafs even still try when a 1st round exit is inevitable

So according to you, the Leafs still don't have a chance to win against Tampa??? TOR addressed what they needed and still have their 2024 1rst... This team should get out of the first round against Tampa

It's a Dubas W for most people bc Hawks fans were asking for Niemela/Sandin + 1st (Davidson was asking for a 2023 1st too). I also voted fair deal though bc McCabe is equal to the first and Lafferty is worth the 2nd as you mentioned
