Are the Wings officially giving up on the postseason? I'm baffled by this move tbh.

Their probability of making the playoffs is currently 11%...plus how could you turn down this return?

Hronek has shown signs, at times, of being a decent offensive d-man but he is horrible at defending. If the Wings upgrade at the deadline this is a great move.

Hronek is a rfa at the end of his current deal

Ah makes much more sense. Thank you.

Still a weird trade tho in a way the nucks are supposed to rebuild while the wings still have a shot at a playoffs spot.

Guess VAN wants more of a retool while the wings realise and accept they can't really make the playoffs this year.

Wow. I really like this for the Canucks. They finally got their Hughes partner.

Edit: Detroit obviously made out pretty good here too. Think it's pretty fair overall.

Hronek is an offensive D man too though, I don't think him and Hughes make sense as a pairing at all.

Whether this trade is good or not depends entirely on the conditions for that pick

The first-rounder should be somewhere between #13 to #18 (Islanders won't fall off far enough for the pick to shift to 2024) so that's probably a little less than what Hronek is worth (comparing him to Romanov), but not pick #40 less. (Gosh, I would LOVE to have that pick now that we've traded our 2023 first!) This was a good trade for Vancouver IF they've found a long-term partner for Hughes (not just for a couple of seasons), but it's a great trade for Detroit WITHOUT any "if's."

Oh Jesus, this just keeps getting better. (worse for Canucks?)

Paying a 1st and a 2nd for a D that shouldn't get more than what Carolina paid for Ghost? AND he's injured?! My god, I'm dying from laughter here

It's the pick they got for Horvat, so identical conditions. Top 12 protected / Isles can choose to shift it to 2024 if it's Top 12 (there's some debate about whether the Isles have the choice because of how Lou worded it at his presser

I hate this deal, the first isn't going to be in this year's treasure trove of top picks and we have no RD,

Yea it’s definitely a weird trade for both teams. You hit the nail on the head. VAN must feel like they can become more competitive a re tool, Hroneks age fits that window. Not exactly sure what DET thinking, he also fits their current window. Maybe VAN just made an offer they couldn’t resist. Or maybe DET is trying to make a move for a larger player. Who knows.

Makes sense. I misread it at first and I thought it was Vancouver’s first round pick

I understand the draft is deep & that's two quality picks (Vancouver's second is going to be 36~), but this trade is puzzling on many levels. First, how will VAN find cap space to pay him in a year. Anyways, why is VAN buying if you move your captain and one culture player. This trade is two years too late. From Detroit perspective, I get that the value is fair, but I'm not sure why you'd move a 25 year old top4 defenseman for only fair value.

EDIT: Unless DET uses those assets to bring, let's say, Chychrun, this makes little sense. Funny thing, if they do, is that the pick used on Chychrun's selection was originally from DET and was moved to ARI with a cap dump!

NHL trade market:

"its a sellers market!"
*canucks furiously try to sell all their players for assets

"ok, apparently its a buyers market"
*canucks furiously unload assets for players

Canucks roster: "wtf are we?"

Good for both, Vancouver finally gets a partner for Quinny boy

And Detroit sells high on Hronek (even though I have a feeling they could’ve gotten more for him

I mean the value was there, and VAN obviously needed a RHD, but they also needed those picks.

kinda seems like a fair trade because i dont think its necessarily makes sense for either team? But I fear any phone calls from Yzerman, so gonna give it to detroit.
