This is the optimal solution.

The Oilers don't need to find a netminder to wint them games. They have the most offensively-gifted forward core in the league to do that. They need one that won't actively lose them games. Anything with a pulse and a save percentage a hair over .900 would be a massive upgrade.

One of the other blogs I frequent ran some numbers if Edmonton had Talbot - who on all accounts is underperforming in Ottawa - and the difference sees Edmonton with somehing like 88 points. This is an astronomically good team that's being let down by the actual worst regular goaltender in Oilers history.

Campbell did just enough with Toronto to con Holland.

I wonder what you would have to give up to swap him with a less bad overpaid goalie if Holland went that route...

I could see the Canucks scratching a wildcard spot if they pick up some guys in UFA. Having NHL worst goaltending because of Demko's injury is the biggest reason the Canucks are at the bottom of the standings. I can't wait for Demko to carry us back to mediocrity

They've had over .900 in the playoffs and it hasn't made a difference. I think the difference is their defense.
Edmonton is averaging about 35 shots against per game in the playoffs. Tampa was around 30 when they won their cups. Colorado was around 25 last year.
Overpowering offense may work more often than not in the regular season, with a variety of opponents, strength of competition, and levels of play.
When it comes to the playoffs where you are facing the same quality team repeatedly, and a consistently higher effort level, you can't rely solely on offense.

They gave up an average of 43 shots per game to Colorado last series. A .900 save percentage still means 4 goals against every game. Even with a .915 save percentage you're still more likely to give up 4 goals than not. Goaltending can only be expected to do so much. Over 40 saves/game is not a reasonable expectation, nor a recipe for success. It doesn't matter how good your offense is.

Campbell may well be a mistake that will need to be corrected, but even with a Vasilevskiy behind them they'd still be hard pressed to win games with those numbers.

And the fact they tampered to get him makes it funny im not gonna lie

I like Campbell, I respect him as a human, but man he is way to streaky to be a starting goalie. Hes a good tandem guy or when hes the only goalie he can carry the load, but thats it. Injuries and streaky play frustrate fanbases

Like man last year it was good play to start the year then bad play for 3 months but we all blamed the rib injury for that, then he came back did well, and in the playoffs wasnt the best and yea you could go he was a reason in not winning but whateves.

True but in this case it was super early

Oilers be waiting for Jack Campbell and offered a deal was all we heard for like months before FA started. Heck I think it started during playoffs lul

Got to check when the reports started as I know it was either before or during playoffs

With a primary assist last night, byfield now has 15 points in 35 games with pretty good underlying numbers. He doesn’t turn 21 till august. I think he’ll break out as a PPG player if he gets the opportunity next season
