Outstanding TDL from Rob Blake

Created by: McSorley
Team: 2022-23 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 3, 2023
Published: Mar. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade 2 important lockeroom players, a 2023 1st round pick, a 2023 3rd round pick, and a 2024 5th round pick.

Acquired Gavrikov, Korpisalo, and MacEwen.

Gavrikov a mid upgrade a LD(don't trade for Kulikov too or anything Blake)

Korpisalo who has been worse than Quick last season and early this season, but doesn't come close to how important Quick was to this lockeroom, Korpisalo is a small upgrade in net.

Traded Lemieux(a very liked player in the Kings lockeroom) for a guy that can fight better, but worse at hockey and will likely being a scratch the majority of the 4-7 game post season.

Result: Pissed off lockeroom and barely a better hockey team, job well done Blake.

Quick has been abysmal for years and making what a top 6 forward makes. It was time to cut ties given Petersons collapse. It’s a business and he did the right thing.

Stetcher was a decent depth add. Why would you guys give up assets right now? Team looks terrible.

Then retire him to the press box. The excuse given by Blake is that they moved his contract so they could clear his cap space to add at the deadline. Unless there's a yet unannounced trade waiting to be reported, they still have more than enough cap space to keep him and let him finish out his contract in LA. Effectively immediately, the 23-man roster limit no longer applies.

Quick has not been "abysmal" until this year. Quick's cap hit has never been and issue and we are leaving $6,659,705 on the table this season.

This.

$6,659,705 is enough for Boeser, maybe Blake's got annother disaster move to make.

The Lemieux trade seemed pointless even if it was just a 5th in 2024.
Quick trade is mediocre. I see the upgrade but seemed expensive for a team that still doesn't have solid goaltending.

I don't think the Kings have any use for Boeser.

Provorov would make some sense, but after the Lemieux/MacEwen trade went through, it didn't sound like there was anything else brewing between the two teams.

What effect would health bombing him have? He’d just be pissed off in the room. You got a better goalie that you desperately needed and a solid d man. It was a business decision. You’re thinking with your heart. Quick is washed.

This deadline reminds me of 2018 when Blake decided we needed Falafel and Thompson. Make a trade because he has to, but calling it an "upgrade" is questionable. Not sure which deadline is worse 2018 or 2023. I vote 2023.

Heart is what leads teams to championships. Quick wouldn't like it, but he's a professional and would still be the great lockeroom guy every team needs to be successful.

Apparently not seeing as they traded him for maybe the worst player in the league

The lockeroom. Clearly Blake doesn't care, he's the one trading them.

And left $6,659,705 on the table for nothing. That's Quick in the press box right there.

I'm not sure what you mean by "health bombing." He wouldn't go on LTIR, he would just be a healthy scratch for the last 6 weeks of the season.

Quick would be the first to admit that his performance hasn't been up to par. I don't think he'd be upset if the Kings just said they're going to let him finish out his contract with the team.

However, he (and his wife) was reportedly very upset that the Kings would trade him. LA is "home" to him and his family and he wasn't expecting to have to go anywhere else.

Health bomb is healthy scratching. Hockey lingo, pal. Of course he’s upset. He should’ve played better. It’s a business. He’ll be fine and the Kings will be better. Still not legitimate cup contenders, but better.

I played in college and I've been a hockey fan for over 30 years and i've never heard the term "health bomb" before.

But the business here doesn't make sense. The "business decision" was to trade him to open up cap space for other moves. The Kings didn't use any of that cap space and have more than enough space to fit his contract until the end of the season.

The only reason to do this trade is to "do right" by the player, and in this case based off of the reaction of both himself and his family, they clearly didn't.

I think you only hinted at what for me is the biggest flaw in this off-season: trading the 2023 first when it seems to me that he could have added an asset or two to move the pick into 2024.

I'm going to be revisiting this subject the day after the draft. Keep an eye out for these names: Ziemmer, Stramel, Price, Burns, Bjarnason, Hrabal.

Not going to lie I was really hoping Blake and Yzerman would have made a deal for one of Durzi or Roy ( even though I know he would be the last likely). Still think that Quick trade was bs. Maybe they were after a bigger fish but missed? Don't know who was available though.

The only thing I can think of was that they wanted Hayes at 3C, but Philly wasn't willing to retain enough salary or the asking price was too much, so they settled on MacEwen instead.
