Overreaction Post - What If We Rebuilt

Created by: la_scaloneta
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 5, 2023
Published: Mar. 5, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously if we lose in the first round, there will be those who say that it's hard to win - there are many great teams. However, if you've watched the Leafs play the last few years, you'd know there is a problem with the way this team is constructed in comparison to the system that is deployed, it just doesn't add up. Yet we don't change things, we don't bother to bring in players who actually suit Keefe's system, and Keefe himself doesn't change his player deployment and system to accommodate the players that he's given.

The very easy thing to do would be to fire the GM and coach for someone who can give more coherent direction, but at this point the core needs a fresh start as well, and we better do the rebuild properly.

Got a nice AHL team cooking of:

Knies - Byfield - Holtz
Berard - Turcotte - Firkus
Puustinen - Veleno - Essyiomont
DOC - Goyette - Voit

Jones - Clarke
POJ - Casey
Kral - Wallinder

I didn't think NJD would decline it. It seems like a fair offer.

Voted better than Dubas; because once you remove Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Reilly, Liljgren and Woll all players Dubas inherited, what has Dubas done besides sign J.T. ?

It's not the trade, it's the cap space. With Meier there's no room for major pieces

He hasn't done anything meaningful tbh. It's hard to say what his thought process has been, he just tries to get guys on cheap deals and he doesn't think about how they're going to fit into Keefe's system. And most of them don't fit.

If we are rebuilding we'd be happy to retain 5 million for the last 2 seasons.

It’s to dump the albatross Marc-Edouard contract and to get a competent D partner for Karlsson.

Nope. But I think Toronto has reached the stage where at least we need to consider rebuilding.

Haha, I love this. Toronto would burn to the ground.

Lafferty at 1C... Trouba and Vlasic first pair D @ 15mil... just properly amazing stuff.

This team goes from being one of the best in the NHL to a perennial contender for the #1 overall pick for at least 5 straight years, easy. Even if all those guys you trade for reach their full potential, this team wouldn't be able to compete with the future that OTT, BUF, or MON have in the next bunch of years, let alone NJ and the West.

Marner is the heart and soul of TO even when he's struggling, and getting rid of him (even that kind of return – or bigger) would be on par with the Brett Hull, Eric Lindros, or Cam Neely trades.

To be fair, trade Matthews for as much as you can possibly get for him before he walks in FA.

LA will not make that insane trade. In fact no team will ever make a trade like this. Way too much to give up for a player that might test UFA

I wouldn’t make this trade if Mathews goes pen to paper after the trade, it’s way too much to give up.

EDIT: If there was to ever be a trade for Mathews to LA. It’s MAYBE 1 of Byfield/Clarke. Turcotte. Petersen. And 2 1sts. Even then I still don’t think I do it knowing Mathews will probably hit UFA. I wouldn’t trade Clarke. Mathews is obviously light years away from Byfield so I’d put him in over Clarke. And maybe add a prospect like pinelli

It's not really much to give up. Byfield and Turcotte have shown nothing in their D+3, and Peterson is a cap dump. The first is a very low one.

They have more value to Rob Blake than me.

I say hold onto them and wait for a player like Mathews to come available which I think is possible.

I’ll just quote myself. I take back pen to paper idea. But I still wouldn’t add Clarke.

Add in another quality prospect or add maybe Durzi but that’s still an insane package.

We’ll just take a stab at Matthews when he’s a UFA it lines up better that way because Kopitar is off the books.

NSH would be a good fit for Marner.
Here's my offer:
Marner for Duchene, Vomecka, Nurmi, '24 1st, '25 2nd

That’s a terrible offer, you may as well swap the first with a seventh.

The truth is we should be a contender but we’re not because the coach doesn’t know the system to deploy and the situation to use each of his players in. In terms of ability, we definitely have a team that can win the cup, but because we use players in the wrong role and situation, we always lose.

Some really bad trades there especially for non Leaf teams. No consideration of other teams cap. Also to think one year of Nylander is worth all that Seattle. NTCs are real and have to be considered in any trade.

Hey I think it might be good reason for Leaf rebuild but a more realistic time in TDL 2024, when Matthews/Nylander/Brodie expiring expensive contract are kinda meaningless cap wise to buyers.
