The isles may have to pay to dump Bailey, but they are not taking back a player that is basically equivalent to him in production.

Yeah. Leave the 2nd out and maybe they do a one-for-one swap. No chance they pay the 2nd and take Labanc back as well.

Why would San Jose take on an older less productive player with a higher cap hit with no incentive to do so

They both kind of stink and have roughly the same cap hit, but Labanc's actual salary for next year is $2.25MM more than Bailey's. Is that savings worth more to them than a draft pick? It's not out of the question.

The very last position that SJ needs to spend money on at the moment is the bottom-4 LD spot. SJ already has a plethora of guys signed to play the 3 LD spots for the next season or two:

1. Ferraro
2. Vlasic
3. Knyzhov
4. Macdonald
5. Mukhamadullin
6. Cicek
7. Simek
