The Matthews Drama

Created by: DougieGilmour

Description
This is not something I want to happen… it is something that is very realistic and we need to accept that there is a possibility Matthews will want to head a big market in the western USA. If we get to the deadline next year and it’s clear no progress has been made with an extension ( 14Mx8yrs should’ve our max offer) then we need an early trade like what went down with Horvat. I’m guessing LA and Vegas will be the front runners for Matthews. I wouldn’t rule out Dallas either but I’m hypothetically going with LA and Vegas. Now LA has been a cool and calculated operation under Robitaille and Blake. I can’t see them offloading a ton to get Matthews before the deadline. I do think Vegas will because when have they shown any restraint? They want to win and win now. I’m structuring this around expiring deals:

To Toronto:

Chandler Stephenson (resigned 4.65Mx5yrs)
Reilly Smith
Keegan Kolesar
Ben Hutton
2024 1st from VGK
2025 2nd VGK
2025 3rd VG

To Vegas

Matthews (1.625 million retained to fit into the cap at 10M)

Sam Lafferty

If we can’t resign him, this trade gives us a team that can still compete in the playoffs both next year and beyond. If you look at the lineup below, it’s not that bad. Also, we can set our sights on a big target to come… 97

First off, Matthews has a full NMC clause kicking in next season. The Leafs have more than enough money to resign AM34, its going to get done.

In the event where AM34 doesn't want to sign and management makes the decision to move him, Vegas is the last team he would be traded to given their cap situation. Plus, why aren't we getting any prospects? It makes no sense to just immediately give up and trade him

Well if the Leafs are "giving up" on next season at the TDL, by trading Matthews, might as well trade Nylander and Brodie too. Gotta think Liljegren, ROR and Samsonov get more.

That's an awful return for matthews, like really really bad.
Also the only matthews "drama" is a bunch of fans thinking he's gonna leave for literally no reason. Nothing about it is realistic

I’ve done it on their end and they can pay him. Their cap issues actually aren’t that bad. By getting rid of Smith, Stephenson, and Kolegar, that frees up enough money to pay him short term. Then they can either move Lehner or buyout McNabb’s final year to get more room. Martinez’s contract will also be up. What other team is going to pay at the deadline more than this and still possibly give us pieces needed to still compete? The best part about this less than ideal situation is that if he does force his way out, we could recoup some very good players and have room to sign them. It would actually be a better version of what Calgary did with the Tkachuk situation because a team that wants to win a cup at the deadline gets to add one of the best players in the league. What’s not to like for them? And prospects are no better or worse than getting picks. In fact, the 3 picks going to is gives us a chance to draft more players our scouts like rather than taking someone else’s prospects. Either way the futures are the least important part of the deal. We would still be a contender.

There’s no giving up. That’s a good playoff team trading with another good playoff team.

Not that your opinion means anything but good luck finding a better trade with a better destination under those circumstances because it wouldn’t happen.

Good one dude, your trade sucks and the leafs would easily find a better one, even under your made up conditions that arnt remotely realistic.
I bet you cant even come up with a single actual reason matthews is gonna walk on free agency.
And no, him being american is not one

I never said he was leaving did I? You get REALLY defensive over things that aren’t real. It’s like truly worrying.

You literally made up a post called matthews drama and then used the words "very realistic" to defend the point. So if it is very realistic then tell us why.

Zero chance of Vegas giving that up for Auston Matthews, They've a 0% chance of resigning him for the money he's going to want. Both teams equally pass.

Will do…when the Leafs break the streak that’s older than Vegas.

The funniest thing about this, is assuming we can't keep a top 5 player in the world, our backup plan is to somehow get the best player in the world a year later...
