Can’t be 8 years, but I think 7x15 makes a lot of sense

Toronto will match that for sure. But that doesn’t mean 34 will want to stay.

Don't see the kings going out and spending big. They got a bunch of young good talent and will probs keep Kopitar on a cheaper deal while also maintaining good cap space

As if Matthew's was offered that leafs would match and are able to give him the extra year

If they can find a way to keep Kopitar, that becomes an exceptionally scary roster. Keep Kopitar, and move Danault, and maybe decrease money elsewhere, but letting Kopitar go would be a big mistake, especially with what happened with Quick already.

I know so many Leaf fans say they can match any Matthews offer.....but should they? The Kings seems like a good destination for Matthews and for the Kings.

Why would the leafs not match a big offer for Matthews

Matthews is their franchise center the guy they tanked for in 2015-2016.

This is the guy u work around to go for it and win a cup. Did Washington give up on Ovie to get their cup no, Tampa with Stamkos no, heck Colorado with MacKinnon of course not. Toronto will be going for it as lets be honest Toronto in 5 years will still be as good if not better than they are now as they will have cap space to use (especially when JT is done) and can continue to build a solid team around him

As if u let him go your basically going alright rebuild and become the sabers

Those teams you mentioned won with a cost efficient team. Washington isn't the same after paying their previous cost efficient players with raises. Avs, lost Kadri for cap reasons, and McKinnon gets a big raise next season, doesn't make the Avs or McKinnon any better. Sure Tampa did well Stamkos with as their highest paid players but they have become a little weaker and will in the future as Kucherov, Point and others now make more than 8.5m Stamkos.

I don't know how you can make the Sabres/Leafs comparison. Sabres were a team that didn't spend to the cap, and two of most expensive players, Skinner and Okposo were overpaid.
If the Leafs have lets say 24m allotted to Nylander and Matthews in the summer of 2024, but those two players sign elsewhere, you can be sure the Leafs will be spending that 24m on other players
Heck then the following season, there is 22m cap in Tavares and Marner off the books. Again the Leafs will spending that cap, but on what players?

Costs mean nothing as in the end its about winning u don't extend Matthew's leafs aren't taking a step back they are taking 100. Matthews, Nylander and Marner will be extended as in the end who cates for capspace when u got elite talent

As for sabers comparison how many times did that team have to rebuild a bunch. Leafs lose matthews another 5 year rebuild incoming so no playoffs and more wastes. Pay the kid and move on

"Who cares about cap space when u got elite talent?" In a cap league any team should. Leafs haven't been "successful" by having the most cap by any team invested in four players . And to boot the Leafs don't have a good prospect depth to fill the roster with NHL players on ELC contracts.

They dont go look at all the top teams rn do they got cap no do they care not really. If they did they wouldnt be extending all their best guys but they do and yah know why its because they want to win.

And your giving leafs prospects little credit they got guys who can come up.

But in the end cap means nothing when u got elite talent and want to keep them around. As if Matthews goes Leafs wont go spend that cap on 4 or 5 guys lul they will rebuild again

Four or five guys, maybe other UFA want to come to Leafs like McDavid.
